Question regarding closing door (spoilers)

So the baby is assumed to be deaf, but when the mother leaves for the studio the baby cries a second after the door bangs shut. So is the baby not deaf? Was this a clue?

Maybe she felt the absence of her mother.

I don't remember that part but I noticed the baby had some kind of hearing aid/ear piece in the final scene.
