Disengaging what? (spoilers)

Micro-thrusters? Can we assume the vessel is in a spin to simulate gravity, and she commands the computer to 'disengage micro-thrusters' and she's suddenly weightless?

Then, the computer says "centrifuge rotation initiated" and (artificial) gravity returns instantly?

What was this about?

reply

Turning the gravity on and off.

reply

Ok, but the gravity is surely provided by the spin of the vessel. It's not going to stop and start instantly.

reply

Milo did it.

reply

Yeah, I've seen that reported as a plot hole.

I looked past it, though.

The thing is errors like that are just not necessary. It's an insult to the audience too. It would have made it more entertaining to see artificial gravity dissipate/return at least a little gradually, instead taking us out of the illusion like that. I get that many people may not be aware or care about the physics of it, but many people are aware and do care. Simple little details can make all the difference in movies like this.

Also they could have padded another minute or so on the movie by at least an attempt to make it realistic.
