Do you think Mother was insane?

Chrisjdel brought this up in a post, and I happen to agree. Not "raving lunatic insane," but still insane: the lies, the manipulation, the killing, and especially the obsession with bringing about human perfection as if she were a god. So, maybe we can vote?

reply

not insane at all, just dedicated to her mission, with no regard for any individual human life, just the "common good", as defined by her.

reply

how do you define a god? That who has the power to destroy and to create. Sounds like Mother to me :D
The lies, the manipulation, the killing. All justified in her mission.

reply

That's right. Mother is based on God of the Old Testament.
People always demand 'proof' for such statements and there is none of course. That's because art is not science, most important things are delivered through subtle allusions. However, apart from the obvious parallels with the Flood, the names of the people Woman was living with are a hint.

Comparing Mother to Old Testament God is pretty good!

I think Mother was only as insane as us. She was only extrapolating our own human-created morality out to its extreme degree. The scene where she is asking about the doctor's decision regarding the 1 patient vs the 5 patients: It created a moral argument about human value and gave weight to a decision that saw the death of potential murderers and thieves. Her abortion of APX02 was probably a result of the same stark distinction.

It's funny. This weighing of human value by AI is coming very soon to us IRL. Self driving cars will inevitably encounter situations where it has to pick between hitting 3 children, 5 old ladies, or piloting the passenger into a wall. Moral decisions coming to your local AI soon!

reply

stupid computer. It should have just gone over the 5 old ladies.

reply

What if it was 100 old ladies? Like a propane tank next to a building containing a crochet expo. That vs 1 baby vs driver. I better be able to unplug that AI is what I'm saying. Who chooses themselves? Christ?

reply

If the car had any real brains its pull aside let you out tghen hit the chrochet expo. Theres clearly no choice.

reply

There are plenty of subtle and not so subtle hints to religion, specifically Christianity.

The flood, the ark, the shrine that the woman had in her container, all the talks about moral choices, the symbolic "death" that is mostly a retirement in the shadows (kinda like god did after jesus), etc etc.

reply

Mother is playing the old "I must prevent humanity from destroying itself by ...... destroying humanity". Not sure why this trope is still being played out. Even the collosus the fobin project didn't go that far.
