her life is just too depressing
I mean, I'll finish out the season considering there is only one episode left, but I do wonder who the target audience for this is?..

I'd say it's the same target as the one for Shameless, SMILF's lead-in. The Gallaghers live similar desperate lives.
Regarding her quality of life, I was rooting for her to get into the WNBA.
You know, funny that you mention it, because as good as Shameless was, beyond a certain point I just couldn't watch it anymore.
I think it was because for me it was utterly unrelateable, even through my family and I went through poverty ourselves for a time.
Although I don't know, really - I am thinking of some of my favorite shows right now, and it's not like they have characters I identify with either, but I guess it was just too much white trash reality or something.
exatera, I like you, and I think that your username is clever--and I am not easy to impress, grumpy bear that I am. I'm sorry to hear about your history, and I hope that you're in a better place now. I hope that it's clear that I am in NO WAY saying that you should like either of those two shows. We like what we like, period. It's entertainment, not health care. You know what's best for you in this area of life. If your choices make you happy, and I certainly hope that they do, you're on the right track!
PS For what it's worth, I have never perceived you as coming from a deprived background. I have always seen you as being a thoughtful and sincere person. If someone were to say that to me, it would mean a lot.
I wouldn't call myself deprived - like I said said, it was something we went through for a time, when we were new immigrants in this country. We are doing fine now :), it's been 25 years.
Regarding the WNBA thing, though: I mean, of course I was rooting for her and everything, but it was obvious from the start that it was an entirely unrealistic aspiration - she is just too old. Right out of high school maybe she would have had a fighting chance (and even then it would have been a stretch, since she is short and skinny), but not when she is 30 already and a mom.
Not to pick nits, but Frankie Shaw is 28. Is her character, Bridget Bird, supposed to be 30? Did I miss something (which is always possible, but it bothers me when I miss something about something that I like). And this question in no way is meant to disagree with your point that she was a massive long shot for the WNBA. She has no height and no upper-body strength; but SMILF has impressed me with Shaw's creativity. I would be fascinated to see how she handled the story of Bridget being a basketball pro in Boston and how she handled fame and wealth, and, hardest of all, having her dream realized. Oscar Wilde once said that "There are only two tragedies in life. One is never having your heart's desire; the other, is having it." The Gallaghers are clearly never going to have their heart's desire. I can understand why you tired of them. I keep hoping that SMILF will go a different way.
Happy New Year!
They never explicitly stated Bridget's age on the show (that I recall, anyway), she just looks about 30, which makes sense considering Frankie Shaw is 31.
Thanks, same to you.
Okay, that's kind of what I'd thought. Thank you!
PS According to Wikipedia, which is not the most reliable source, Frankie is actually 36 years old. There was no way she was getting into the WNBA! But at least she and her show got into the Golden Globes.
I would have believed she was 28. Good for her.
