Funny and Smart: I Like It

This new dramady is a perfect complement to its Showtime lead-in, Shameless. Wholly owned by its creator, writer and lead, Frankie Shaw, it has refreshing wit and, to me at least, the benefit of taking place where Frankie started out and where I live: Beantown, the Hub City, the Athens of America, Boston. Even the name of its production companies had me roaring: Supahsmaht Productions and Quantity Entertainment (the motto for which is "100% Quantity Guaranteed"). Also, ladies: full-frontal male shlongedness. Not Spartacus-quality dongage, at least not yet, but it's there. Tonight's ep was about Frankie worrying that he birth of her son had stretched her pussy too much; so this is kind of like Shameless meets Larry David in Boston.

reply

Turned it off the minute I saw Rosie ODonnell.

reply

I understand your reaction; and they have made her look much older than she is, but she's only in the ep for a few minutes and you missed a lot of good stuff.

Also, I guess you missed the part in the opening credits where it said "Featuring Rosie O'Donnell."

reply

I've never even watched a second of it. I saw she was in it in a preview and was like ..NOPE!

reply

Okay, thanks for letting us know. I infer there's something that makes Rosie so repugnant to you that you just could not enjoy SMILF. That's too bad, because the show is, as we say in Boston, a wicked pissah.

I'm 10 minutes in and have to ask myself, "Why do people watch other people's go nowhere lives?" So far, just someone going about their day... nothing special, nothing interesting, nothing extraordinary... seriously? THIS is what people CHOOSE to watch on TV now? OTHER people's boring lives? Watching NORMAL is refreshing wit? How?

Jumped on Showtime to check out the movies, and it was on the front screen - I don't bother watching "TV shows" anymore, so I thought I'd try one real quick. I remember why I stopped with TV.

Within the first ten minutes there were several tits and ass shots. So, I understand HOW it got funded, just don't get why people watch this.

My schedule is light tonight, and this looks to be only 30 minutes, so I will continue, but don't see ANY reason to.

reply

yeah... this is LITERALLY the stupidest thing I have ever watched in my life, and I can't finish it. It's pointless drivel. Relys on sex to have ANY sort of "interest" (I guess?) and it is killing my brain cells.
I'm out.

I have much more exciting things to do with my time than watch some loser's life go by in the guise of entertainment.

reply

GOD DAMN! Let it all out...take a few more posts...they don't cost nothinšŸ¤‘ Got any cats?

reply

Probably a lot of cats, d.f. Hope to God s/he doesn't stumble across Curb Your Enthusiasm. Or reruns of Seinfeld or Friends. Probably thinks that droll is a mythic Norse creature that lives under bridges and terrorizes Three Billygoats Gruff. Adores This Is Us. Asks if there are Youtube videos that can explain a movie to him/her (actual fact, based on a 5-second examination of posting history).

Full disclosure: Boston is my adopted home, so I am predisposed to like this show. Sue me. From what little I've seen, it looks like Bridgette's mom and dad live in the Charlestown section of Beantown, which is a gentryfying neighborhood that is (as the film The Town examined) the Bank Robbery Capitol of the USA. I am predisposed to liking comely female nudity, one of the many reasons I like Shameless. I support projects that are female-driven. SMILF is written, produced and directed by Frankie Shaw. I am a proud male Feminist. This show is not for everyone, and it doesn't try to be, for which I applaud it. Delicious, it does seem to be for you. Enjoy.

PS Frankie Shaw can fucking ACT.

reply

I think she can write as well. :)

Prior to this show, I had no idea.

reply

I agree, and I think it's going to be fun to watch this show as it unfolds and develops. I think that it will be like watching a gifted child grow up. Will it be perfect? Absolutely not! Frankie Shaw is human, and so she is far from being perfect. And I don't mind.

I understand ENGLISH may not be your main language, so understanding what you misread is forgiven. And seemingly your intellect is far too advanced for me to understand your attempts to put me down, so let's assume I am offended, even thought really I'm not. :)

IF English was your thing, you'd figure out the YOUTUBE question was meant "WHY" do they need to explain endings - people are apparently too stupid to figure it out. It was very obvious, doesn't need explaining. It is difficult for me to understand how society got so stupid they need youtube videos to explain it to them.
Again, knowing English is not your primary communication skillset, I can see where you got that wrong.

So, this show, written by an "amazing" writer, details what someone does on a daily basis. If everyone woke up and jotted down what they did during the day, they would be an amazing writer? I just don't get it. Alas, as I am not your mental equivalent, I am still waiting for specific detail as to why this "show" (soap opera??) is so witty and amazing. Please tell me so that I might learn how to enjoy such witicisms, that I am apparently lacking. :)

The more I see of SMILF, and Frankie Shaw, the more impressed I am, and the more attached I feel. This is fresh in a way I've not seen before. This is powerful feminism without stridency or platitude. In short, this is precisely how feminism, and every other kind of position, should be presented. This is a show that loves the USA while being clearly aware of its inequalities, nor presenting the view that they are insurmountable. Is it perfect? Of course it's not. I don't see what Bridgette saw in Rafi, and I don't see what his girlfriend sees in him, but that's minor. What I do see is that Frankie Shaw has an expressive and adorable face, a fecund mind and a really good right cross. I'm going to keep watching because this is a very unexpected gem.

And I have no fiduciary interest whatsoever in either Frankie or this show.

Kane:
Sounds like the type of show I'd watch, mainly because I like movies/TV shows written, produced and directed by women---because they depict women more realistically, and as actual, fill-fledged people with issues as as opposed to the stereotypical "hot chick",sex symbol, or femme fatale roles, or the female character who's just there to assure the audience that the main male character is straight, lol. Plus, I'm a woman, and find them more interesting and relatable than the usual Hollywood regurgitation of female stereotypes. Don't have cable, but would like to check it out as soon as it gets on DVD.

reply

Im enjoying it...
A bit sad and a bit funny too...fairly realistic you could say
Reminds me of 'Fleabag,' another pathos and humor riddled show about a single woman trying to piece together the wreckage and be happy
Not really my tops subject matter but man... When a story is told right im probably in
Not bad stuff!

reply

I don't know if Frankie cares if her stuff appeals to men, which is one of the things that appeals to me about SMILF. I like it more and more, and she's not even trying. Oh man, that scene where the Harvard kid came all over his own face . . . !

reply

That was hilarious lol!!
Good show no joke

reply

That sounds like AMAZING writing! Coming all over someones face. Exquisite.

You could save time and just find free porn online. Try google.

reply

The joke is that he shot in his own face. I've never seen that particular feat in an adult movie.

reply

I suppose you had to be there...

Golden Globe nominations: best comedy show and best actress in a comedy show (Frankie Shaw). Pretty impressive for what should have been a low-profile, short-season half-hour comedy on late Sunday night on a network watched by relatively few people! Great work, Frankie Shaw.

reply

Very impressive!
Good for them they deserve some attention
Im a week behind ...must catch up
