free guy or ready player one ?

which film did you like better?

as an avid gamer, playing most of my life and into adulthood, Ready Player One just bored me. it was well made and all that, but i dunno... got tired of the "oooh look at this character we got the rights to and stuffed in here" over the generic plot of virtual business take over.

While still owning the 2600 and very familiar with Atari's ADVENTURE game, I also own but don't really enjoy GTA V which Free Guy was obviously based around.

I loved Free Guy, and after waching, the first thing I thought of was, "Man, that was way better than ready player one". These are just my opinions.

I'm buying Free Guy when available, but will never watch RPO again.

Ready Player One was much better, I loved it and I've seen it a few times.

I was disappointed with Free Guy. It was just okay, certainly worth a watch, but it didn't really click with me the way Ready Player One did.

I found Free Guy more enjoyable with a better cast, I doubt I'll rewatch either again though!

Ready player one, not saying Free Guy was bad just think didn't have the enjoyment that RP1 had.

Ready Player One

Free Guy. RP1 was excessively long and relied way too much on nostalgia rather than a good story that flowed.

I love both!

Ready Player One tugs at my heart strings a bit more because I was a teenager in the 80’s and love all the 80’s music and pop culture references but I really enjoyed how feel-good Free Guy is. Ryan Reynolds is just so damn likeable in it and there’s no dystopian future so it’s such an easy watch.

Both films I have rewatched multiple times just to pick up all the background details and I suppose for me, Ready Player One is more of an emotional investment than Free Guy is but both are entertaining and nice, fun fantasy movies.

Free Guy is more like a family comedy, it lacks cultural references compared to RPO, and misses several opportunities to take advantage of them. It also has several inconsistencies, especially the villain trying to stop Guy (for christ sake, just wipe or shut down the servers, the axing scene was ludicrous). Ready Player One tries to be a lot more "serious", and is very well made, but has one scene that breaks the movie, when the villain believes he is in the real world but is still in the game (Oasis clearly wasn't The Matrix). In the end, both stretch it too much to appeal gamers/nerds and a wider audience at the same time. I give both of them 6.5/10.
