Lacks the emotional gravitas of The Truman Show

He's a NPC (non playable character) who is actually artificial intelligence, but the questions of personhood and desire for love and freedom only extend so far.

I'm not saying they it should have tackled the big questions of identify that the Truman Show does, maybe it played the balance right.

I'm with you - I think it tried to toe the line between Truman Show dramedy and silly comedy, and misfired. It was funny but not that funny, poignant but not really, a little provocative but not enough... it was just kinda there.

I liked it enough but I'll probably never see it again.

reply

Yeah, I second this.

I think that pretty much sums it up.

weird. I never once lined this up with the truman show. I mean I suppose I see that, but seems like a reach. feels like a much better version of ready player one to me - one I would want to watch more than once, and have.

Yeah the only Truman Show bit to it was the random breaks the movie took to focus on some random Youtuber blabbing about the game. Frankly it had too much of that as the Youtube breaks mostly just created roadbumps in the movie. In the end it was trying to be deep it was mindless entertainment which it did a pretty decent at.

I think it felt like Truman when he touched the water - and it was the “edge of his world” type thing.

Definitely.

This movie doesn't try to be as serious as Truman Show or even Ready Player One.

Think of it more like Pixels, it's like a parody.

you took the words out of my mouth

reply

Yeah, but it’s a lazy parody. Truman Show was more of a true satire.
