I think the writer momentarily forgot this was set in 1993
While the group is all lying in the soccer field, the most hilarious exchange in the movie occurs between Helen and Cameron:
Helen: Is this just a joke to you?
Cameron: What? I didn't even say anything.
Helen: Exactly! You never say anything! And your silence feels aggressive, judgmental and it makes the space not safe.
Cameron: That's ridiculous.
Dr. Marsh: Well Helen perceives hostility in your behavior. You can agree or not, but you have to recognize that that is her truth.
I literally LOL'd at that exchange because it perfectly NAILS millennial speak, which I figured was the writer's intent. But then I remembered that this movie is supposed to be set in 1993. As someone who was a (gay) teenager in 1993, I can assure you that that type of dialogue would NEVER have been spoken at the time.
