Somewhat funny story about the persistence of Scientologists

In the seventies, when my dad was 19, he went to a free screening offered by some Scientologists. At the time they didn't have any property in the area where the were offering this and I guess were testing the waters or building interest.

While there, he talked about a martial arts hobby of his and his admiration for Bruce Lee.

He never joined the church or anything. I guess he may have given them his address, not realizing what they would do with it.

Every two months since 1972, he received a handwritten letter on Scientology stationary (addressed from their center in Clearwater, FL) with virtually the same contents:

Hi Will,

I wanted to reach out to you about your experience with Scientology. I feel it would have a great impact on your life.

It's definitely helpful in pursuits like martial arts.

I can't say much for the personal feelings of Bruce Lee, but many successful people have achieved great things through their practice of Scientology.

Please write or call, I would appreciate talking to you.

And I swear, they were written and signed by the same person for all forty goddamn years.

He moved three times. And kept getting these letters.

So he died in 2011, but I guess they never got the memo, because these letters keep coming to the house, addressed to him, along with copies of their magazine "Celebrity" and brochures for courses and books.

I feel like this person who keeps writing him is getting older--maybe too old--because the handwriting is getting worse each time.

I think it's funny, but also sort of sad. He had one session with this person forty years ago, never responded to any communication, never showed interest, never purchased any Scientology-related material.

But it's also a bit disturbing that a. they kept this file that has details of his interests for so long and b. they knew his new addresses.

Since they were keeping such close tabs on him, I'm surprised they don't know he passed away. I'm sorry for your loss, by the way. I lost my dad 4 years ago so I know how hard that is.

I agree it's really creepy that they kept sending that stuff for such a long time. My suggestion is that you start returning to sender. Cross out your dad's name and address on the letter, write, "Return to sender, addressee unknown" and put it back in a mailbox. Do the same for any future letters from them (or anyone else who you don't want to get mail from anymore).

How sad for that person to be writing to someone for years! Just like they said in the special to be a Scientologist you give up LIVING. What could that person have been doing instead of trying to recruit another member? Clean up a park or volunteer at a hospital or become a foster parent. So many options that would seem more fulfilling than writing letters!

Reminds of the time I innocently filled an Open English form and kept receiving annoying calls about their courses. I told them "No" but they insisted.

This is way worse though 😁
