was wondering if one of the trio tipped off the bad guys - two things :

when they arrive, one of them shuts his door in dad's face

one of them also said, 'they're in the attic'

the leader of the three, however, was righteous. it would be one of the other two.

I think the guy that shut the door was just trying to protect his own ass. I think the young man that they took the van from went back and told them what the dad said and they figured it out. Then they came looking for them. I don't get why Tom didn't go get his gun figuring the 3 men were trouble.
