I think she left everything, including David behind.
What was the secret Madame told David about Maria?
They obviously left out the fall-out from that revelation and jumped to the future showing David, Madame, and Maria going back to their former societal roles.
Of course it was an ambigous ending. But that David was mentioning to Steven, that happy ends are the better endings - clearly hinting to Maria - was for me a sign, that he might get back to her. They both realized they couldn't continue in their old ways, so Maria had to go. Hopefully into the better life with David, but even if not, she became a much better self confidence.
