Good but not great (so far)

I watched the first episode last night.

Just based on that one ep, I'm going to put this one in the good but not great category. The performances are solid and the story is interesting because it's the story of Waco, and that story is fascinating. But the execution on a lot of fronts feels fairly average.

I do think that it feels pretty even-handed in its treatment of the story. They're making Koresh out to clearly be a flawed character but not a monster, at least so far. His followers seem pretty reasonable for the most part, not like wild-eyed cultists. (Though I gotta say, as soon as Koresh tried implementing the celibacy rule my ass would've been OUT!)

I also liked the way they tied Ruby Ridge into the story, though it occurred to me that someone who wasn't at all familiar with Ruby Ridge may be a bit lost with that sub-plot.

All in all, I'd give the first episode a 7/10. Though it's important to note though that this episode is all set up, laying the foundation for the crazy shit to go down. So the show may very well improve from here.

In any case, it's at least good enough that I'll stick with it.

What network is this on?

reply

Paramount, which used to be Spike.

Cause I really like Taylor. Glad he got a leading role.

Like I said in the post, I would recommend the show. It probably won't knock your socks off, but it seems to be a solid watch so far. I also like Taylor Kitsch and think he's underrated.

You should try to find a way to watch the show. It's only six episodes.

I can manage 6 episodes

Sounds like everything that comes out these days. Good, not great.

Honestly the actors in this show look way too polished.

Just got caught up with eps 2 and 3. I thought both were better than the first ep. This is shaping up to be a better show I thought it might be.

They are being very fair to Koresh and, just as importantly, are calling the government out on their bullshit. I'm actually surprised by how hard they are going after the government but I'm glad that they are.

This is a good show, fairly balanced, and Kitsch is killing it as Koresh.

Last night I realized that I had watched first five episodes of this how but never did watch the sixth. So I rectified that.

I thought it was pretty good overall. Kitsch did an excellent job as Koresh, just further proving what I already knew, and that's that he's a pretty good actor.

Going into the show initially I was wondering how much they were going to emphasize how badly the government fucked up, but they definitely don't let the government off the hook here or try to portray the ATF as misunderstood heroes or any bullshit like that.

I think this is a win for the Paramount network. It was their first big production since the change-over and I think it did a pretty good job of announcing that Spike is gone and this is something new and they're really going to be emphasizing quality programming.

Taylor Kitsch deserves at least an Emmy nom. He was so good in Waco. I hope to see more projects that shows how talented he is.

He's an underrated performer who unfortunately seems to regularly get hooked up with failing projects.

John Carter was supposed to be his big break but ended up being one of the biggest financial disasters in movie history. I thought Battleship was okay, but most people did not like it. True Detective S2 was panned by critics and regular viewers alike. American Assassin was mediocre.

Waco wasn't universally loved, but the general sentiment toward it seemed to be positive. Not sure what the ratings looked like but it seems to me to be a success for him and I'm happy about that.
