Who the hell knows? I watched a round table discussion with the show runner and director, and even they don't agree on what happened, so how are we supposed to? To me this is just an excuse for lousy, sloppy writing.
My guess about Appleyard is we're supposed to believe that once she found out she'd been running away from someone who'd been dead for years, that changed her. Still doesn't make sense. Again, bad, sloppy writing.
When I was only 2 episodes in, I wondered why its rating was so low. Now I know.
