Ariel doesn’t listen to her father and instead puts her trust into a devil worshiping witch, she must learn some sort of lesson from this, right?
Nope, she basically tells her father “thank you for hearing me” when she should have said “I’m sorry for not listening to you Pops”.
So the message of “respect your elders” somehow gets twisted into “teenagers should be heard” which isn’t a message at all.
Technically, the witch could be older than her and her dad, so respect your elders wouldn't apply.
Personally, I don't need a message, I just want a story to be interesting, and that's where this movie failed for me.
Interesting angle. I don't believe the cartoon set out trying to be a fable and impart life lessons on the audience. It tries to be an empowering example for young girls and show them they can be strong on their own and follow their own way for sure, but besides that it does not try to have a bigger point.
shareIts important to note that the cartoon like all disney cartoons of the era took a fables with very clear moral messages, then changed them to be fit for young children, cutting out most of the hard stuff. Its no wonder the remakes of cartoons rather than original tales have likewise conflicted messaging.
shareAt least the old cartoon film had some useful messages in it. Like:
- listen to your parents once in a while, they might have a reason for having rules
- don't make blind deals with someone you know is shady and untrustworthy; you might not get what you wanted out of the bargain, and sticking it to a parent who made you mad is not a good reason to do it
- learn how to forgive
- never take what you have for granted
Do you see those kind of messages in this movie? I doubt it.
Movies don't need to have messages. They can just be entertaining.
