It was a decent movie, why so much hate?

I really liked the story. It is quite fascinating, but why so many reviewers hate it?! It is at least much better than useless superhero movies! You learn something watching it.

I think it is because some in Hollywood still hold a grudge against Gibson for his drunken arrest where he was misogynistic and a touch antisemitic, not to mention he leans right politically, and those commies in Hollywood hate that.

All the comments in this thread come the the practically synchronized conclusion that people cant separate actors from the characters they are playing. The fact that none of them realize this let alone state it tells me they are just as guilty of it.

The hate doesn't make sense to me either.

It was a well put together film with some really good acting. Penn is over-the-top in many scenes, but everyone else is pretty good. It's a historical drama so I understand it certainly isn't riveting and it is a bit lengthy, although I thought it was paced quite nicely except for the rushed ending. The ending felt like they just needed to wrap everything up. Overall, I thought it was a well acted, beautifully shot, and interesting film. It isn't outstanding and I think you need to be in the right mood for the material, but it isn't dreadful like the critics made it out to be. Definitely worth a watch if you find the subject interesting or like dramas.

The reason it got so much hate was that both Gibson and Penn are polarizing figures because of their beliefs. Both of them should have learned a long time ago that they are in a business where you should keep your thoughts to yourself because when you speak out on a controversial subject you are going to alinate half the people and in today's world people get very militant in their beliefs. It wasn't a bad movie, a bit depressing and could have been edited a bit better.
