It was a decent movie, why so much hate?
I really liked the story. It is quite fascinating, but why so many reviewers hate it?! It is at least much better than useless superhero movies! You learn something watching it.

shareThe low metascore reflects thier review bias. They only found 4 reviews?
They leave out common sense media, which reviews most films. 3/5:

Roger Ebert gave it 1½/4, which is what you expect from a zombie!
I didn't read the reviews, but I didn't like the movie because Sean Penn was sooo overwrought in his performance. It is a fascinating story and the movie should have been much better.
Is it getting a lot of hate?
It's getting hammered by the critics but the RT audience score is 71%.

It also has a 7.3 on IMDB.
I watched it today and enjoyed it. Penn's performance is a little weird, but Gibson is excellent, the story is interesting and it's well-directed.
It's a shame the film, reportedly, was not actually finished. I guess that's why it ends somewhat abruptly. It is already a good film. I can only imagine how good it would've been if it had not run into production problems and had been finished to Mel's liking.
I don't get it either. Maybe they don't like Gibson for his politics?
Or maybe because it's just a traditional kind of film telling an actual story?
I enjoyed the film. A bit sullen for my taste but well done. I always love Natalie Dormer so I was jazzed to see her.
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall watching Penn and Gibson interacting off camera.
7.5/10
It's an awesome movie, hate could be because it has a lot of controversies: https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a26823219/mel-gibson-professor-and-the-madman-movie-controversy/
but why bring up superhero movies? weird
Interesting article. Thanks for finding that. I watched the movie when it first came out. I’m a big Mel Gibson fan and I wanted to see him adjacent to Penn considering they’re divergent people. I watched the movie the whole way through but it took some discipline as it dragged on a little. I could definitely tell that it was an abandoned project from the lack of editing some really extraneous stuff
