so what was the thing in Bhutan?

I enjoyed the second part of the movie - I thought James Dale did an exceptional job with the material he was given, and there were a lot of interesting ideas and tropes.

But the first 10 minutes of the movie are such a beautiful and haunting little horror short. And just _what_ are we to make of that thing in the cave in Bhutan? A God? A mutated human? An alien? Is it the source of the interdimensional activity in the rest of the movie?

Seeing Paul sitting in front of it was the moment you realize that things have taken a horrible turn for the worse. But I feel like the design team did such a good job on that skeleton - the extra fingers, the bony protrusions like wings . . . only to have it not explained or really referred to again.

SPOILERS BELOW:

Actually Paul was the guy in the hospital so many years later that was dying so they had to find someone to take his place. You know who that was. Over all the years, that bizarre cult like organization was delving into Paul's experience and how to master and solve everything around what was "possessing" him. They were receiving messages through him and also worshipping him. To me, the skeletal being was just an evil entity that needed a vessel to communicate through. It was shown again toward the end when James was on the verge of being overtaken.
