[spoilers] Sets Up a Sequel in a Very Open and Original Way

Much the way Stargate did, Moonfall ends in a way that always for sequels that can go in nearly any direction. Now that the secret of the Moon has been unlocked, humans are free to explore other worlds, or battle A.I., or rebuild their own planet, or... anything really.

While the film itself is fairly standard disaster film fare, and isn't the masterpiece that Stargate is, it's still quite an interesting final moment. I could see this working well as the first of a series of science fiction books. When it comes to sequels, Hollywood seems more likely to repeat the original film, so branching off in an entirely new direction is unlikely.

I agree. An excellent origin story for a decent TV or book series - possibly a film sequel if it makes a good return? Hefty initial budget according to wikipedia though - $138–146 million - so that's a long way to go.
