probably be a "check your brain at the door", enjoy some fun, if not pointless, non-politically driven, non- woke caring, action sci-fi with no message and lots of movie action to munch popcorn to.
I suspect people are ready for this. Drops in feburary, the movie garbage dumping ground month, so it might suck, but I will support it a couple times, just for not being a damn sequel, and having some big screen fun!
Agreed. It feels these days like superhero movies have taken over this space and crowded out all the other escapist films. It seems like we just don't get big-budget popcorn action films like we used to.
Hopefully this one will be a lot of fun. The key will be having a story and characters that are actually interesting to go along with all the computer generated images.
I am a big fan of popcorn movies that are designed to simply be fun, crowd-pleasing, escapist experiences. That's definitely what Moonfall seems to be aiming to be.
My only regret here is that Roland Emmerich has fallen in love with CGI. The reason that Independence Day still looks so awesome in many of the destruction scenes is because Emmerich used a lot of practical effects to work hand-in-hand with the CGI. These days though he seems content to do everything in a computer.
That gripe notwithstanding, I am looking forward to the movie. We need movies like this, movies that allow us to set our cares aside for a couple of hours and just enjoy a fun spectacle.
ID4 also has one heck of a great soundtrack, so many times, especially these days, people working on movies completely underestimate music and put in a lackluster track.
I'll have to make a note of the music the next time I watch the film. I can't remember much about the soundtrack.
I think it's a genuinely great movie, though. It gets thrown into the "stupid fun" category, but I don't actually think it's a stupid film. I think it's very well-written and well-made for its genre.
Godzilla vs Kong wasn't bad. It at least had a really cool visual style.
Fast 9 was pretty forgettable and Suicide Squad made the mistake of getting political.
But your mention of both SS and Spider-Man supports a point I made earlier, which is that the "popcorn movie" or "escapist cinema" arena has become overly-populated by superhero movies.
Stuff life Moonfall--not a superhero movie and not part of an already-established franchise--does indeed seem rare.
That's (mostly) a perception thing. Which means, essentially, that the marketing departments are doing their jobs (WELL!). For reference, in 2021 we had:
A Quiet Place Part II
Black Widow
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train
Don't Breathe 2
Dune
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions
Eternals
F9: The Fast Saga
Free Guy
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Godzilla vs. Kong
Halloween Kills
Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard
Jungle Cruise
Monster Hunter
Mortal Kombat
No Time to Die
Nobody
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Snake Eyes
Space Jam: A New Legacy
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spiral
The Forever Purge
The King's Man
The Matrix Resurrections
The Suicide Squad
Tom and Jerry
Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Werewolves Within
Wonder Woman
A lot of those films are not really what I'm thinking of when I think "popcorn movie." I'm thinking specifically of big-budget action movies. (Past examples would include films like Independence Day, The Rock, Terminator 2 and The Mummy.)
Many of your examples are from other genres, like horror (Halloween, Escape Room) or family films (Space Jam, Tom & Jerry), or they are superhero movies like I mentioned (obviously Wonder Woman, Venom, Shang-Chi).
I will concede that several of your examples do count, though.
I get it. Thing is: I would imagine that, rather than cutting down on the other types of big-budget action movies, the influx of superhero movies is simply increasing how many there are. In other words, there are actually MORE of those types of movies being made now, since superhero fare is so popular.
I'm not nearly bored enough to look over the past years and check, tho. Shrug. Just pointing out that there is plenty of mindless fluff out there; the Superhero genre seems like it has more of a market share simply because they're such Big movies, and the marketing dept's do their job Well.
I would be quite interested in seeing the stats on this.
As you say, I am just working off of my own perception and that perception may be wrong. Maybe it's true that we have been getting as many of those kinds of films as we always have. I will say that, if we have, it has seemed that not many of late have been especially memorable.
Maybe that also is just my subjective perception and the numbers would contradict that idea as well. But it seems like it's certainly been a while since we last got a film that I'd call a stone-cold classic that's on the level of something like Jurassic Park, The Mummy, T2 or Independence Day.
so many of these are sequels, prequels, remakes, additions, reboots, etc etc etc etc etc
I think I counted 6 in that list that were original?
this is where moonfall rises: it is NOT one of those reboots.
As much as I dislike CGI for being abused, TO ME, it works here because it is presenting something NEW, not seen before, and NOT the same old CGI: heroes punching humans through brick walls with zero damage, physics defying gravity leaps, etc. Moonfall knows it is filled with CGI doing somewhat new stuff, not the same old overdone thing.
Not sure what your point is. I haven't checked how many are sequels/reboots etc, because that wasn't the issue. The claim was that superhero films were disproportionately represented, which is Clearly not the case.
As far as the CGI in Moonfall, if you think it's something new, you need to see more movies. You can start w/a few on that list, in fact. . .
i counted 11 super hero movies, out of that list of 32. that's 1/3 and I probably missed some I don't know.
In CGI, I mean specific actions, things we haven't seen before: huge moon flailing about, very large gravity disruptions, things like that. Lots of stuff has been done in CGI, but many of these scenes don't look like the many other cgi action movies I've seen. just caught BLACK WIDOW on a flight - pretty much skipped through every FIGHT scene as they all feel the same. moonfall feels different, to me and others.
Yeah, it's large action CGI and that has been done before, but the film premise feels new, equals interesting to some of us.
I'm looking forward to the effects in this movie. . .to bring it back to the OP, even if this just turns out to be silly popcorn fun, it'll be worthwhile. If the CGI is different from stuff I've already seen in Dune, Star Wars, or any other space actioner, that's just a bonus.
i don't know what you are saying, but I don't waste time getting "triggered", I simply ignore "woke", like most people. and I try to not support it when I can find out ahead of time about it. that's not being "triggered". that's trying to support movies with GOOD WRITING, not good protesting.
BATMAN? Again, I don't know what you mean, since I leave conversations and don't bother revisiting - like normal conversation should be. This new Batman, what, the 7th or 10th actor now? looks better in the latest trailers, but I won't go to theater for it. It will be on streaming soon enough so I can fast forward through the "...when I was a child..." and "here are my FEELINGS that are supposed to be important" that boat anchor modern movies to a stand still.
thanks to the massive success of viewers tuning in to watch idiot strangers cry on reality TV shows... now, movies have to be boring soap operas also.
The go woke go broke slogan you guys constantly repeat is actually really a thing you guys say to make yourselves feel better. Black Panther is one of the big targets for you folks and it made over a billion dollars. The Disney Star Wars is what you guys consider woke and they made a great deal of money. Captain Marvel is what you consider woke and it also made a great deal of money. Now are there woke movies that bomb? Yes but in the end how is that any different from other movies that are not woke that bomb? Dredd, Blade Runner 2049, Hugo etc. You just like to cling to it bombed because it was woke mentality because it will suit your narrative.
That is a fundamental aspect of Batman's character. In every interpretation it deals with some type of angst and trauma about his parents. If you don't like that you do not like the character. The great thing is the movie will be a success it does not need your contribution. A movie does not need your stamp of approval in order for others to consider it a great film. Oh and I know Kravitz being cast as Catwoman absolutely burns you zealots up and I am loving every minute of it.
I could care less about the whole woke thing. It's last year's boring fad. people are tired of it and ignoring it.
mostly what I notice, is if a movie SUCKS, it doesn't do well. sometimes, wokeism is a part of it.
GB2016, WW84, I didn't enjoy Cap Marv but it wasn't for me I guess, Charlie's turned dyke Angels, and on and on...
They should focus on writing rather than fads or trends.
you are welcome to toss me in some general group, but, seriously, I have no fucking idea what you are talking about. hahahahaha! whatever you like wasting your own time with.... :)
