Excellent review, exactly my thoughts (as a huge Ancient Mediterranean geek) ...it's nothing more than lame propaganda. Also there are a number of errors in the show regarding accuracy but for the eyes it's better than nothing...

Boudica, Gaiseric, and Attila--barbarians all--were portrayed in the series as ruthless murderers of women and children.

Are you kidding us? How many times do they constantly claim they were warring each other ALL the time. Yes, we know the world was a brutal place, and they say that ALL the time. But it is one thing to fight rival tribes, it's a completely different matter to fight an invading empire, and there is no doubt that the Roman Empire took what it wanted, enslaved people by the thousands, were brutal in their conquest and back stabbed those they negotiated with when the time came. But there are always at least two sides to every story, and the truth is, this documentary was about the Barbarians Rising, and they did just that.

This show serves as a correction to the sort of ignorant history being espoused by the average uneducated American (I have a Master's in History and a PHD in Anthropology, and I can assure that virtually everything this poster has said is incorrect).

Historical merit is a horrible, racist term that is no longer ever uttered in Academia. Anthropology has recognized that history was written by the winners and the forensic evidence has proven that virtually all of it was a lie to extend empire and exploitation.

Those in opposition to Rome were not subjugating the peoples around them. They had weapons for defense only and did not have organized militias to perpetrate such crimes (it is the structure that feeds upon the weak, as is true with the US empire today).

No, life was not 'nasty, brutish and short' as the old cliche goes. The fact is that only the infant mortality rate was high throughout history and prehistory. At any time in history, when the average life expectancy was estimated (never accurately calculated) to be from 35-50 (cavemen on the low end and 50 as late as the 1850s), that low average was ALWAYS due to the infant death rate. Neandertals and Cro Mags had effectively created shelters by at least 200,000 years ago and death by accident and predators was not at all common anymore. If you made it past 7 or 8, it was extremely likely that you would live to be 65 (this is true in every single country on earth currently where life expectancy is below 50). Virtually all bones of Neandertals and Cro Mag adults are over 50 years of age and over half are over 60. In the late 1700s, when expectancy was 45, over 80% of the populations lives to be over 70 (Ben Franklin and many of the founding fathers lived to be well into their 80s). When 10% or more of the population dies at ages 0-7, the data is greatly skewed. Even in Roman times, the vast majority of the populace lived well into old age.

There is some inconsistent logic at the close of this myopic, poorly thought, and utterly ignorant post.

Of course, the Romans were more evil. The poster says they were simply better at it, which does in fact logically mean they were more evil. What errebus (and it is an apt name because he does ere about everything) is calling the real history is the brainwashing of thousands of years of white, western propaganda that ignored the actual evidence in order to portray their view of the world as the good and noble one.

It wasn't. Anthropology and fine shows such as this are correcting those errors.
