...they would have to sacrifice one child to save them all since they were still young enough to have more kids? Weren't they already attached to the ones they have enough to be so objective about it?

They no choice. If they kill the kid then they're murderers. And they still die. Only if they knew what killing them. It's a hard choice.

They're pretty old... Especially the wife...
