Wow, this was excellent! 9/10 for me.

Great acting and great dialogue. Some parts were really funny and towards the end it get's actually pretty damn exciting. I love these types of off beat movies. And this has to be one of the most original vigilante films ever.

You know, I think there's a big problem with movies nowadays.
Most of them fail the "show, don't tell" rule.

But not this one.
Like I said it's full of little details. We don't always know for sure what's going on between the characters but we have some clues, and it's perfect this way!

That is true. I hope Macon Blair writes and directs more movies and they are as good as this one. These types of films feel like a fresh breath of air among all the comicbook/superhero movies flooding the cinemas.

Thanks for your well written review Traveler. I agree with you completely. It was such a surprise to find this terrific movie on Netflix. I love it when I know nothing about a movie and it is this good. I'll definitely watch it again. It was perfectly cast, well written and expertly produced and directed.

I liked it, but I don't know if I loved it. I am a fan of these indie, off-kilter kind of films, but I think I've just watched too many in a short span of time that some of their patterns are starting to show.

It seems to me that films of this nature start off quiet and simple and it escalates into this really sharp turn of a third act where it's extremely violent. I normally don't mind violence, I get its use in stories and all that, but sometimes it feels like these sorts of films...since they're done on a shoestring budget, for the most part, rely on violence for that shocking and crazy element and that turns me off after a while. I guess what I'm saying is it starts to feel gratuitous.

That's more a critique of this genre, or whatever you want to call it, than the film itself. Lynsky is great, as usual and I dig Blair's style. I liked the exploration of humans just being these inconsiderate, rude, and selfish animals and enjoyed watching it. I'd definitely watch it again, but I don't think too many people I know would care for it, but that's a taste thing and not really anything against this film.

Extremely violent? Compared to what?

There was hardly any violence in it, and what very little there was, flew by incredibly fast. I mean, it was a nice story with good pacing that unfolded perfectly... but violent? Hardly.

yeah, one man having his hand blown off with a shotgun,
another man being shot in the gut, then shot through the head,
a man being stabbed in the gut multiple times by a girl who had her own hand shot off with the same shotgun and then later gets a ricocheted bullet in her temple,
also, that guy who got his hand blown off later is shot in the head,

did you turn it off after an hour?

You just listed all the violence in the movie, in 4 short sentences. And in your own words, it was basically a few gun shots and one person being stabbed in the gut.

How is that "extremely violent"?

Add to that the fact that all these scenes were very quick and most were filmed in wide shots. There were no prolonged scenes of torture or mutilation, and no close-ups of the damage done. Just a few guns shots, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG... and next scene.

I guess if you compare it to the average Disney movie, there might be a little more violence here, but then again, just about every episode of Tom & Jerry features more violence than this.

This film featured a few short scenes of violence, and that was fine. It is after all a dark comedy, and if the film had ended with all the characters figuring out they weren't actually so different and becoming friends instead, it would have been a huge insult to the audience. To claim there was any "extreme violence", is just weirdly misplaced criticism that speaks more of the viewers sheltered over-sensitivity, than the movie itself.

No ribtin. You are completely wrong.
Macon Blairs movies are known for being very violent thrillers. Other scenes that werent mentioned were a kid getting violently thrown down the street and killed when he his smashed by a bus, and someone manually snapping the girls finger in half. It is NOT an insult to anyone to mention the violence that was clearly in the movie.
That said, i loved the movie and thought most of it was a nice change of pace from other Macon Blair movies. I thought i would recommend it to many people till i got near the end with the "extreme violence" and decided its not for everyone. The violence is not constant, but is very very graffic compared to most gang/mob movies where many many people die but only from quick gunshot that you dont see blood spurting out all over the place. Tom and jerry has laughable cartoon animal violence, not live action humans getting there hands blown off. I personally dont mind the violence but i can definitely see how many other people would. So he/she is entitled to thier own opinion when it comes to what is or isnt too violent. And if you thought the violent scenes werent shocking, then others arent "over sensitive", you are just deranged and need therapy.

You're just making an argument for your own sheltered lifestyle and general lack of movie knowledge. If this film really was "extremely violent", then what would you call movies like:
Tokyo Gore Police
Machine Girl
Hardcore Henry
Braindead
Ichi the Killer
August Underground
Sadiscream
Story of Ricky
A Serbian Film
And the Guinea Pig series

You know... films that show about 1500 times more violence than I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore.

It's a sad fact that censorship has been running rampant for so many decades, that people like yourself now believe that even tiniest drop of blood is considered "extreme" (and nipples are obscene), while claiming those who have a greater frame of reference need therapy because they are more in tune with reality.

It's completely upside down, and the only cure is to go out into the world and live a little.
