Notes on Season 2 Episode 4

Is it believable that in just a few short months a former teacher at the elementary level Telaya got over her (likely) PTSD enough to learn everything about how to become a dark matter cartographer after having not even been a scientist and become good enough to pass for one on a starship?

Apparently Telaya is emitting a beacon to the Krill ships?

Taxi Driver and one version of The King and I films have something in common: Jodie Foster starred in both. Could this be a hint that she will appear in a future episode?

Why is the tactical display two dimensional? Ships could also travel up or down, but that display would have no way of showing that. Really should be a holographic display.

When the Krill appeared to be torturing Telaya, why didn't Ed demand to see her in the same room? Because use of virtual reality was an obvious possibility.

Apparently Telaya went through quite an extensive surgical process to look human. How could her appearance have been reverted to Krill so quickly?

So Telaya, a mere school teacher, managed to not only escape Union space, but also get all the way back to a Krill planet. Kind of strains credibility.

Great to see another space faring race in the Chaktal! Now it becomes more interesting than just us against the bad guys. Many more story possibilities come into play.

This episode reminded of Star Wars. They take off in escape pods and land in a place that looks like Dagobah, Yoda's swamp planet.

It also reminded me of Star Trek Enterprise because they run through the woods in the dark. Those kinds of scenes are really old style and pretty boring because you can't see much and it doesn't matter anyway. It didn't surprise me to find out this was written by Braga. he should really leave this kind of scene in the past.

Telaya does trust Ed. The proof is that when he tells her about the length of the day on the planet they're on, she doesn't question it, doesn't ask to see the readings, just accepts it.

It seems odd that the Krill have no standard way of dealing with sunlight and that such devices are not stored in the escape pods. In their line of work they must need to be on sunlit planets constantly. Surely they have invented some devices to help them cope with this.

I didn't really get the joke when Gordon is doing the Rorschach test. Is he just too nervous to answer?

How cool was it that Gordon tried to use a version of The Corbomite Maneuver from TOS!

Good stories come in threes so I'm betting there will be a third chapter in the Ed and Telaya saga.

Overall a fun and thought-provoking episode. The idea that change can begin with just one person is a very nice one (could even apply to the current government shutdown), though I wonder if it was wise of Ed to do. The teacher is not that important a person in Krill society and probably won't have the ability to effectively advocate change in Krill society.

"Apparently Telaya is emitting a beacon to the Krill ships?"
- She sent a signal somehow if by beacon or other ways, we do not know. We know the Krill knew where and when they would be, she could have given this information earlier somehow.

"Taxi Driver and one version of The King and I films have something in common: Jodie Foster starred in both. Could this be a hint that she will appear in a future episode?"
- Nice. We shall see...

"Why is the tactical display two dimensional?"
- Two-dimensional screens can show three dimensions. Just like on your TV. On this display perhaps the krill spaceship icons would decrease or increase in size, to show dimensionality. Radars on Submarines are also two dimensional, and yet can be read three-dimensionally. There is a reason Navigator college is a bitch. Anyway, you have a point.

"..why didn't Ed demand to see her in the same room?"
- He had no reason what so ever to believe they were faking it. And he was in no position to demand anything. He wanted them to stop hurting her, and so he gave them information. But as he said later, this info was only leading to gibberish... so he risked nothing.

"How could her appearance have been reverted to Krill so quickly?"
- Well, they used some fancy word for this technique. I bet it had something to do with quantum. Lets us just imagine it was a way to rearrange her atoms to appear like a human. Painfull indeed, but not timely.

"I didn't really get the joke when Gordon is doing the Rorschach test. Is he just too nervous to answer?"
- I think the joke is that he is just very immature, and will see dirty stuff no matter what you put in front of him.

PS: Love your name, just saying.

Hey, thanks for the detailed reply.
I don't have much to add, but thanks too for clarifying about Gordon. Makes sense.
Thanks! ;)

DNA grafting, I think she called it.
Gordon is a perv.
Telaya spied aboard a Union ship as a Union officer, had a relationship with the captain, captured the captain, and even escaped Union custody. The Krill will be very interested in everything she says, for better or worse. She is a good character and it's one of the best storylines to date on that show.

Jodi Foster was not in the King and I. Or to be specific, not in the King and I that Ed and Janel were watching. That film was released in 1956. Jodi Foster was born in 1962. Jodi was in Anna and the King, a non-musical version of the story released in 1999. So I seriously doubt this foreshadows anything.

First of all, it's great how you wrote down so many points. Thanks.

What PTSD did Telaya have?

2D due to budget, accessibility it's something most people would understand.

Was wondering about Telaya's change in appearance as well. The costume would have to be good enough for human intimacy.

I'm sure the Krull have their ways of getting around space.

Glad to see the Chatka too.

Gordon was such a bad choice for captain he was crippled by his own messed up imagination. Imagine him coming across things in space that he'll probably be grossed out by.

I was just starting to feel happy for Ed then he lost his gf.

I would think she would have had at least some level of PTSD from losing her brother and everyone else she knew on her ship save the class of kids being killed, not to mention her own capture and imprisonment.

I can see budget being an issue, but it is important for shows like this to envision the future, to show us where things will go rather than show us what we already have.

Gordon's story was mostly there for humor i guess. Yes, Ed will probably continue to be beleaguered throughout the series since Seth is supervising the scripts.
