Or lack thereof.
His actions nearly killed the entire crew and did do severe damage to the ship.
We saw hull plating flying off and they clearly mentioned structural damage. that will cost many, many credits and time in dock to repair.

Mercer gave him credit for saving the civilians, but their lives were also put in danger of the ship.

No punishment was ridiculous. Demotion in rank, extended suspension of duty, transfer to another post of duty. Something would have been better than nothing. His misdeeds will simply be forgotten by the next episode and the Orville will be fully operational.

And no mention of crew member who supplied Bortus with the virus. No punishment for him either?

He really should have been punished in some way or another, even though he didn't get court-marshaled or have his mate sent away.

What should have happened: when he is off duty Bortus has to be Klyden's butler for a month.

Dude, if Bortus got fired, he'd file a discrimination lawsuit!
That's racism and homophobia trump cards in one! Starfleet would have to pay trillions in damages - and possibly cause a a bunch of brexits in the process.

Could have accepted his resignation and all would have been fine. Though a demotion and/or having to spend time with Dan and listening to his poetry would have been enough, plus it would have played into the comedy elements of the show (Bortus has already shown disdain for Dan).

Plus they would have been able to save all 75 people on the Planet instead of just 30 and he didn't volunteer to go he was told to, if he put his hand up and said he would go then yeah I may have been okay with it.

It'll likely play out weirder as well, as this week’s episode was originally going to be the 12th episode of last season and they shuttled it to 13th and then cut it all together. Basically we would have got Primal Urges as the 13th and final episode last season (where there was only 12) and then Ja'loja as still the opening episode picking up a few months after Primal Urges. So next weeks Home episode may seem like a sudden jump from the one that just aired just as 1st to 2nd was out of whack. For instance notice how last week John LaMarr was in his new role as Chief Engineer and this week back as a Navigator on the bridge and no Michaela McManus as Janel, while there was also no tension between Ed and Kelly considering the events of the 1st episode.

That kind of was my problem with bortus not being punished. It was because of him they couldn't save all 75 people.

Good info. I agree with the general sentiment that Bortus should have been demoted and his mate removed from the ship for attempted murder.

So far S2 of Orville is leaving me unhappy. E1 could have had greater stakes and E2 could have cut 80% of the alien gay porn in favor of more planet drama. Hope it gets better.

Yep, that sucked. At first I was happy when I saw the Captain with his mean face on. Oh good, Bortus is gonna get the book thrown at him. Nope. Silly.
