Surprise! future missions!

At the end of episode Asteroid 685, after the anti-matter explodes, which should have powered the xray laser, that should have deflected the killer Asteroid, McLaren makes a significant comment. He says something like: "If we succeeded, why are we still here?"

I interpreted this as indicating that Bloom failed, that, either, her engineering was wrong, and the xray laser didn't work, as planned, or squeamishness over taking over the pesky soldiers all at once, and earlier, caused a delay that prevented the mechanism working.

I thought, McLaren thought, the Travelers would all die, if the xray laser rorked, and the future they came from was replaced by a different future.

Would the directorate still exist, in the future, if the asteroid was successfully deflected?

We know there were rogue travelers, who went off mission. Maybe some of them figured out how to send messages to teams which were still loyal, that looked like they were coming from the directorate?

Alternately, maybe criminals in the new future they created, figured out how to send them instructions that looked like they came from the directorate. If so their new missions might be to tell them to rob Fort Knox, and bury the gold somewhere their future masters could dig up?

Or maybe the big mission to deflect Asteroid 685 failed? If so the Directorate is still around. Good thing Bloom had them save Dr Delaney... However Delaney doesn't appear in any of the remaining episodes...

I would hope that those in the future would have a plan-B.

Those who remember the big meteor that blasted in the sky over Russia a few years ago might recall it was also during the same week as a near miss by a much bigger object. Although the official line was that the events weren't related, I have it on good authority from a comet scientist that these objects do travel in swarms having started as a large object that got broken into smaller pieces by an impact with another drifting mass in the far distant past. The big one which is supposed to cruise by in like 20 years may very well be accompanied by a whole bunch of "house sized" invisible pieces in near proximity which could cause a whole bunch of havoc. Think of the Levy comet which hit Jupiter. Ten impacts each the size of the one which hit in Arizona could quickly start a nuclear war. There are some in the Russian military who publically believe that the near miss a few years back was the US testing a weapon. Think of the earth as being a target that is floating through a big cosmic shotgun blast. Lots of big holes in the pattern but it is still a pattern and not just one projectile. Who is to say that the errant laser blast didn't also impact another object in the swarm and nudge it into a pattern where it might make contact even further in the future. Yes, the 2017 impact was averted but now they have a 2018 impact to deal with which wouldn't have happened except that they interfered with 2017, sort of a win the battle but lose the war event. Still dystopic, but for a different reason now.

I am really enjoying this series and of thinking where it could go.
