Canadian SciFi

Canadian scifi has stepped up the game in the last decade. Ascension, Continuum, Dark Matters, The Expanse, and now Travelers. So much goodness in sci fi seems to come out of our northern neighbor. I used to look at them as mainly a comedy exporter but now scifi is on par with the laughs.

It is likely due to Stargate being a Vancouver, BC project. People who do that type of production work move to vancouver, and then it just becomes easier to do similar work there. Also why you see the same character actors in sci-fi, because they all live nearby. Also true with other genres. If you don't watch a particular type of show, you may never see any of the actors who only get work in that area, because the industry people likely only watch shows similar to what they are doing.

You might ask WHERE THE MONEY is coming from for these projects.
CANADA and NEW ZEALAND seem to be the reputable discount places for English Sci-Fi/Fantasy media.
Got more money? Film in England.
Got less money? Film in Eastern Europe or South Africa.
Got money to waste? GO HOLLYWOOD!
Got no money? Crowdsource and go YouTube.

Well, as I learned as a child, the Capital of Canada is "mostly American."

The SyFy channel [which I dislike the name change from SciFi, SciFy would have been better /eyeroll/ ] has money but little talent. They wrecked RiverWorld the TWO times they have tried to render it. Then there is Sharknado, which would be better suited for ComedyCentral. They've been better of late at least piggybacking onto good SciFi and Fy projects.
