Instead of a depressing, disgusting lie slumming it with low-life trailer trash. I could only watch the first few minutes and the whole spitting thing put me off this movie completely. How far did you ( someone who liked this movie ) have to watch it to look at these creeps as human beings?
You really have to watch it entirely in order to develop a sense of empathy for the characters and to understand their condition... They don't redeem themselves, we can see how they are... Their failings are there, in particular the bad impulse control... No sense of moral order...
But I think the movie revels too much in the shock value behaving badly rather than dealing with the naunces of behaviour and how people relate to one another (good and bad)... The spitting is the least of it... There is a scene where a grown woman removes her blood stained sanitary towel and slaps it onto a glass door in protest... So the characters are always caricatures for the entire duration of the film and don't feel like full human beings, even flawed ones... It has some moments of slapped on cuteness by the kids instead of real heart...
I think American Honey dealt in a much better way with this. It was much more sensitive to it's underclass, tatooed protagonists... Humanised them, was aware of their context and while it did not shy away from their flaws, it did not revel in it either... It had a lot more heart... One comes away feeling not just pity, but with an understanding and maybe even an appreciation for the misguided freedom of the road life...
Thanks. I just found after watching I could not stand it. I watched a little longer after the spitting thing, but I thought it was not going to get any better.
I disagree. The movie goes out of its way to not reveal too much. The watcher is left to piece together what actually goes down in places like this. I have actually worked in a low-budget motel in Orlando, and though they may have touched on some subjects of what really happens in places like these, they are in no way exploiting what actually happens. And the whole bloody pad incident, is very plausible. The only thing that is not plausible is that, that woman would not be allowed to stay there after all the shit she pulled. Especially mouthing off to the staff like she did throughout the whole movie. Not to mention the numerous warnings about smoking and the prostitution. The only reason she was allowed to stay is because the manager seemed to be a decent man.
I agree completely, and I suffered through the whole damn, disgusting movie. I felt like I needed a long hot shower after that piece of cinematic crap. These creeps were human beings, but on the very lowest level.
it helped that the director found the main "protagonist" nasty prostitute girl on instragram.....indicative of the current world, you can make it big if you're a trashy, gross woman with lots of tattos but skinny and cursing like a sailor
Sounds like your "review" reveals much more about you and other haters than about the film. I thought the film was well done and took risks. So glad the haters reacted: the movies they like you know must really suck. Anyway, it IS a cool art movie, but more than that because it makes a social political statement.
I agree. Why do some people think movies should only show characters that are wholesome and likeable?
Bad, flawed nasty etc characters can be compelling to watch. You are clearly not supposed to identify with them nor agree with their actions and motives. You are watching a movie.
