Specifically when chance decides he wants to refund.the buyers money. D comes tosee him, explains that it would hurt his bosses credibility, amd then gives himthe envelope, saying he cancelled thecheck and instead gave him cash.
I dont understand why this makes chance ok with it. Sure, cash is better than a check since its off the books, but dpes it really benefit dr chance so much that it eases his guilt?
He was saying that it would hurt his business to sell an item then say the seller changed his mind and wants it back. That is just bad etiquette in any sale. So he was driving home the fact that Chance shouldn't pursue with it, and here is your money in cash to say it's over. Knowing what D does, he took the hint.
First, the cash is a transaction Chance cannot refuse like he could by not cashing the check. Then, of course, when someone buys something like that you cannot get it back, but specifically the reason Chance wanted to get the item back was that it was counterfeited, that is, it had some non-authentic work done on it. If the buyer asked why, they are not going to say it was fake, it would the seller's reputation. Once he decided to go in on this deal the sale is final. I think he got the cash price because he was right, the seller should have checked with him, but he was lining up the sale ... it is an iffy area, so to keep faith with everyone the seller gave him cash, and I think he got more than he should have or normally would have.
Great insights but wouldn't Chance want Carl, the antique deal, to have his fair share of the transaction? It was a puzzling plot piece for certain. I get the part there's no negotiation once he agreed to have the work tinkered with, and how Carl, wouldn't be able to get it back nor would he be able to explain it, so it was best to lose, both him and D, $10K each? :/ :\
