Why do they have money problems?

They're both rich. $50k desk, come on. And the wife's house is expensive.

Yet they worry about financial aid etc, it makes no sense. These aren't even middle class people.

Because they live in San Francisco? A ridiculous amount of their income would just go to the mortgage instead of in the bank. Add private school, the furniture, expensive cars and lawyer fees and they are most likely cash poor.

And he clearly has had some kind of career issue. Notice he said is no longer on staff at any hospitals. That's pretty unusual for a neuropsychiatrist.

In the first episode there is a phone conversation, that explains that the ex-wife did not pay taxes on her business for several years. Because of this they owe $250,000 to the IRS.

Mo' money, mo' problems.

I live in San Francisco and they would only be considered middle class here. Maybe upper middle class (based on appearances) at most.

reply

Maybe (they have them) just so we can identify with them?

Hugh seems like a down-to-earth kind of man and perhaps wants to be seen as an every-guy who did well? But the failed marriage, we don't know why yet, put him, like many who 'have it all' for ages, in tight spots. Plus, like others say, the location, the office, private schools, her debt, legal costs, moving out there (from where?) and starting up, well, adds up?

indeed, it's emphasized in the book but not in the show. wife is divorcing him and taking him to the cleaners. she's not so nice in the book.

it's not the wife's house. it's their house that he has to cover mortgage payments on (plus pay for his own apartment) until they can sell it for the divorce - and they are having trouble getting a fair price for it.

she is starting a new gallery (no current income). she gets half the assets plus alimony. she expects him to support her (and her younger personal trainer boyfriend), pay 100% of his housing and hers, all of school.

then, yes, there are the back taxes.

I know right. He's a doctor with his own practice. He's gotta have money.

Live in an expensive part of California and than divorce a greedy woman, see what happens

She didn't pay taxes for years on her business. Because they were married he's responsible for her tax debt

Divorce? She gets the house, he has to pay for her living arrangements and she takes at least half of his assets, and he gains a whole new set of living expenses for himself because he has to move out

She dug them a debt hole that he's struggling to climb out of while simultaneously she's taking what he had left

It's not hard to fall into money problems when you divorce a greedy woman. And don't forget he's got his own problems too. He's not on staff at a hospital which means he has no guaranteed salary. His practice is falling apart and than gets put on pause for the most of the events of this season.

He may have been upper middleclass when they were together, but he's going to be struggling for a few years to make up what she's costing him
