Very interesting suggestion about the origin of the problem
The government via the CIA created the Unabomber, leading to the huge problem FBI would later have to cope with. Karma, eh?

shareWas he really an MK ULtra guinea pig when he was just 16? If that is true, the fucking CIA is at least 30% guilty of his crimes.
(random percentage but ykwim)
I never knew that when this was all happening, when he got caught. And I did read most of the newspaper articles about him at the time.
I say 30% because he does still have free will but other MK Ultra subjects may kill themselves or be permanently fucked up in other ways.
I think he still might have been a weirdo but perhaps not a MURDEROUS weirdo, if he had not been tortured by someone he trusted. His kind of intelligence can be a tool for good or for evil.
Apparently it happened. Read the fourth paragraph here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kaczynski#Education
It does make me feel sorry for him somewhat. It still doesn't excuse what he did and the people he killed were completely innocent, not the ones who tortured him, but it's just sad that he had so much potential and he got so fucked over that the potential turned to evil.
Was he more evil than the professor and the CIA dudes who came up with MK Ultra? debatable!
To be sure it doesn't excuse what he did, but it really makes you wonder when the CIA is the author of it. Sorta reminds me of the way former boogie man Saddam Hussein was actually put there by the CIA. CIA actions seem to cause serious problems.
shareI don't know if you can say the CIA set up his crimes the way they put Saddam Hussein in place. Hussein was more of a known quantity at the time they helped him.
They tortured a kid and then 40 years later the guy blows people up... it's not an outcome they could have predicted. But it is predictable that something bad would come out of their torture experiments, but they wouldn't know exactly what.
It's like shooting into a crowd- you can't predict who it will hit but you can predict that someone will get hurt (very likely).
Both sort of have the quality of karmic payback.
shareI think he was a child prodigy that never fitted in with his peers, that and his high intelligence made him somewhat an outcast. He was probably sexually repressed.
shareKaczynski was a child prodigy and entered Harvard College at the age of 16. He earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1962, then his master's and doctorate in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1964 and 1967, respectively. After receiving his doctorate at age 25, he became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley but resigned abruptly two years later. As an undergraduate at Harvard, Kaczynski was a research subject in an ethically questionable experiment conducted by psychology professor Henry Murray, which some analysts have claimed influenced Kaczynski's later actions.
Whatever this psychology professor did, he fucked up something in him.

Harvard human experiments, 1959-62
'In 1947, he returned to Harvard as a chief researcher, lectured and established with others the Psychological Clinic Annex.
From late 1959 to early 1962, Murray was responsible for what have become ethically indefensible experiments, in which he used twenty-two undergraduates as research subjects. Among other purposes, experiments focused on measuring people's reactions under extreme stress. The unwitting undergraduates were submitted to what Murray called "vehement, sweeping and personally abusive" attacks. Assaults to their egos, cherished ideas and beliefs were used to cause high levels of stress and distress.
Among them was 17-year-old Ted Kaczynski, a mathematician who went on to become the Unabomber, a domestic terrorist targeting academics and technologists for 18 years. Alston Chase's book Harvard and the Unabomber: The Education of an American Terrorist connects Kaczynski's abusive experiences under Murray to his later criminal career.
In 1960, Timothy Leary started research in psychedelic drugs at Harvard, which Murray is said to have supervised.'
Looks MKULTRA but I doubt he worked for the CIA. Kid had such a bright future and was a prodigy. All undone by extreme mental tests.
Murray worked with the OSS (predecessor of the CIA) during World War II, ironically for this show, doing work as a profiler. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Murray#World_War_II.2C_Office_of_Strategic_Services.2C_1939-45
Since I posted the previous Wikipedia link someone has been doing a lot of editing to the page, so much so in fact that the link no longer works properly.
I got interested in this and did a bit of research. I am finding very little actual evidence that ties the Harvard experiment with MKUltra or the CIA.
For instance, this is the most detailed article I've been able to find on the subject:
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2000/06/harvard-and-the-making-of-the-unabomber/378239
And nowhere in the article is the CIA or MKUltra mentioned at all. So my guess is that it is speculation at best to try to tie the two together.
