Until recently the 1950s and early 1960s was always displayed in Hollywood movies as a nostalgic, carefree, safer and more innocent time.

Since the rise of the Progressive Left the new trend is to show that time period as an oppressive dystopia full of injustices and evil, as featured in this film. In fact, Leftist movie-makers and authors tend to present ANY past time period as being hideous and unliveable. For the Left, the only happiness is allowed in stories with a current time period.

Leftist artists HAVE to present the past in this negative way. Any attempt to show the past as pleasant would highlight the fact that 50+ years of strong Liberal influence on Western culture have turned us into a very horrifying and chaotic place with rampant poverty, crime, drugs and disorder.

They must portray the past as hellish to make the modern chaos they created look pleasant by contrast.

I think this film is much like "Sunset Boulevard" or "The Great Gatsby", in showing the negatives of the life that was depicted. I agree, the 60's are now portrayed as hellish nowadays, and try to make our time look more pleasant.

I find myself often disagreeing with both conservatives, and liberals on issues in America, and i think film is a strong way of showing both sides, even if the liberal side is very overpowering. Keep in mind though, all art is subjective, and in ten years time, what will "The Shape Of Water" be remembered for? "Sunset Boulevard", and "The Great Gatsby" were a different outlook on their current time, that many people accepted as seeing the other side. Maybe in 5 years or so, we'll get a film showing their are negatives to our current time period which will hit people hard, and that will be the movie people will remember.
