I saw the trailer, and I think that Margo Robbie was kind of miscast for Tonya Harding. She seems to have none of the looks, much less the personality for taking on such a role in a film.

I was not planning to see the film, "I, Tonya", anyhow, but seeing the trailer re-enforced my decision not to. Not withstanding that I think that Tonya Harding is a disgusting person who doesn't deserve respect (she hasn't earned it.), the film "I, Tonya" looks like a piece of junk. There's enough junk in the way of movies coming out nowadays, without that one, imho.

The movie "I, Tonya" is clearly meant to generate tons more sympathy for Tonya Harding, and I'm not buying it. You and Jehosaphat are trying to persuade me to see this film, in the hopes that I'll develop a more sympathetic and benevolent attitude towards Tonya Harding. Well, I'll tell you this, flat out, and straight: Tonya Harding will not get my sympathy, and I refuse to see this film.
Goodfellas, Godfather I and Godfather II, and Dirty Harry are different films, entirely. They're not real people, so I don't have any problems separating fantasy from reality. Tonya Harding is somebody that doesn't deserve much sympathy for what she did, and I'm not about to give it to her. Period!

"Roger that. Over and out."
Same to you.
Were Steven Rogers and Craig Gillespie to do the Nancy Kerrigan story, might you watch both films? I saw this film in part to see how a couple of filmmakers who have a questionable empathy for Tonya Harding would do it. I knew all along I'd read later to see how fair and factual-or not-the film is. Can you not enjoy a few great acting performances?
shareAbsolutely not, swl1019. That film seems like it totally fictionalized and glorified, and made comedy out of a rather tragic story. I refuse to watch a film that clearly glorifies either Tonya Harding or Nancy Kerrigan.
shareI know how I remember it and what I thought when this all went down when I was 25 years old, and when seeing it today it puts it all in perspective. We were making fun of Harding too a bit, with her unrefined, tough, redneck persona. Whatever anyone's final opinion is I can't respect it if they refuse to see the movie and then, assuming it went down this way, discuss their opinion. I'm not saying they need to change their opinion, just reevaluate it after seeing the movie and see if they feel at all differently and then discuss why or why not. I know I do feel differently a bit.
shareShe's miscast as beautiful (iconic) Sharon Tate. What, she's the only actress in town? Actually, that film shouldn't have even been made
shareShe did a great job with the role. She was also the producer so there's that.
shareMargot Robbie was outstanding. Whether or not she became Tonya Harding, I don't know. She was definitely this Tonya Harding. I look forward to her Oscar nomination. I also anticipate her losing to Frances McDormand graciously.

Nancy Kerrigan was the victim - this is Hollywood fantasy
share[deleted]
I refuse to watch it even for free
shareWhile I agree that Nancy was the victim, do you feel the same way about other true crimes stories? Bio pics on Bundy or Gacy? Even Manhunt: Unibomber?
I did watch the movie and there were times when I felt empathy for Tonya, but it didn't really change my opinion on her. She was portrayed as never taking responsibility.

I thought I replied to hownos.
shareI don't think Bundy or Gacy were ever portrayed as victims. I haven't seen Manhunt: Unabomber
shareI didn't really think that Tonya was portrayed as a victim. Maybe that was just my perception. The movie certainly did show unfortunate circumstances in her life, but I didn't find her too sympathetic. I think that because of shows like Criminal Minds that profile killers, and even some of the horror movie reboots that give a back story to the killers, I just saw it as kind of a back story movie.
shareI may have to watch it

Exactly. And they were both criminal and sociopaths/psychopaths. La Tonya has not been diagnosed as being psychotic. Sure, she had "no" involvement in Kerrigan's battering..
You and I are in full agreement.
shareMargot Robbie was, for me, unexpectedly superb in this role - my feelings exactly.
shareI agree with you completely. Margot Robbie WAS Tonya Harding. I remember when all this happened so well, the publicity was intense and the public really did condemn Tonya and her family. So did I. What I never expected was to like Margot’s performance or to even feel empathy for Tonya which I started to, after watching this film.
The most amazing thing about Margot’s craft and performance was that about five minutes into the film I forgot the REAL Tonya (which isn’t an easy task), she evaporated into the past because Margot actually became Tonya Harding, as strange as that sounds.

But that is WRONG. You're not supposed to forget ("evaporate") the real Tonya because of likable Margot Robbie, and her so-called craftsmanship. Whats the point of a bio, then? Strange? No, just dense.
Yes she was very good. I'm actually really surprised at how good this movie was.
