Recast for Barkin

I know some don't like her and others do but if they would have gone with another actress who would be a better fit to play Smurf?

My list:
Sharon Stone
Jane Seymour...aka Kitty Kat
Sigourney Weaver
Kathy Bates

reply

The same gal who played smurf in the movie. She's on Blunt Talk these days. If Barkin says baby one more time, I scream. Too old, too retouched way too skinny.

reply

Yesssssssssssssss I cringe every time I hear her say that. Ewwwwwww

reply

LOL I know, right? She says "baby" after every few words.

reply

You guys understand that Ellen is playing a character and is reciting lines from a script right???? The original Australian character of Smurf says "baby" as well . This is just a show not real life and Ellen Barkin did not write the script.

reply

Maybe she didn't write it but you still have to hear her and look at her being all macho(ette)

reply

I like Barkin but what about Susan Sarandan?

reply

I think Melissa Leo would be perfect.

reply

Oooh, excellent choice! I like Barkin in this but Leo would have been great too.

reply

I agree about Leo but Barkin is attractive to me - most actresses her age have had so much work done they look plastic. Plus she has that edge and she's just an excellent actress. I think she's killing it (no pun intended) in this role and I love it when she says "baby."

She's very sexy in Sea of Love with Al Pacino and she did a movie w/Dennis Quaid that's also really good. She's the reason I started watching AK.

Look at us. You pretending to be me, signing a book I didn't even write. -Selina Meyer

I've seen a lot of the things she's been in and I really like her...she made me laugh in "Ocean's Thirteen!" She plays De Niro's wife in the upcoming movie, "Hands of Stone," the Roberto Duran story...

reply

Oh, I agree. I think Barkin is attractive. She's not a classic beauty, never was, but she's extremely sexy which really works for the role. I think her casting is great but Leo could have pulled off the badass stuff just as effectively.

Jane Seymour is too classy for this bunch. And, too beautiful. Nahh, I like Barkin just fine.

No offense but I think these are pretty bad names for Smurfs character. Mayyyyybe Sharon Stone because she could play that darker evil sort of manipulative role, but that's it.

reply

Bates could play any role in Hollywood but yea Stone could probably pull it off and at least she still has a little sex appeal. And we all are well aware that Barkin isn't the character but it's just the way she says "baby", sounds soooooo forced and unsexy and overused.

reply

Barkin is well cast and very believable. Stone may have more sex appeal but would probably be a bit less convincing in the mothering role, which is at least as important. Bates may be a tad old for the role. Debra Winger could be perfect; why don't we see more of her these days?

Life is a state of mind.

reply

She' starring in a series called The Ranch; I think it's a Netflix show.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

reply

After seeing the movie "mother's day", I'd say Rebecca De Mornay. I can also see Jamie Lee Curtis and Annette Benning.

reply

Rebecca De Mornay. Wow, where has she been?

How about Theresa Russell?? She needs work!(And her son, actor Max Roeg is gorgeous! He could've played the Deran role!)

reply

DeMornay was on "Lucifer" this year. :)

reply

Russell would be good. I can also see Cybil Sheppard and Virginia Madsen. Jessica Lange perhaps; she may be a bit too old, but has the acting chops.
(disagree about Max Roeg being gorgeous though :)

reply

Jessica Lange, after American Horror Story she has it ALL

reply

I think Barkin is doing an admirable job with the dialogue that she is given. The character could be written better and made more interesting. Barkin's performance has made the character compelling with not much help from the script.

However, if we're playing the "Recast Game".................

I agree with an earlier poster that Melissa Leo could NAIL this part.

I haven't seen her in anything in years but am wondering how Debra Winger would do.

reply

Opening scene of the finale and she says "BABY" two times...geez I wanna puke. 😵

Melissa Leo was great, along with Christian Bale in the Fighter, so I agree, she would've nailed the Smurf part!

Marcia Gay Harden would've been good, too!

Only other who would be as horrible as Ellen Barking might be Katy Sagal. Their characters could have been sisters (SOA and AK). Only thing worse than watching Ellen is having to listen to the dialog. Did anybody count how many times she kissed her BABIES and said BABY?
Hope they retool writers and SMURF actor for season 2
