Smurf Knowing / Not Knowing About Deran

There was an interview with Jake Weary (Deran) and Executive Producer Jonathan Lisco discussing Deran's Gay storyline.

Here are the bits I found interesting:

"LISCO: Smurf's relationship to all of her boys has depended on wielding her sexuality with them, in a certain way, and wanting to believe that even though it's taboo deep down they find her attractive. So the idea of Deran being with a woman would be hard enough for Smurf, but it's at least something that she can understand. The idea of him having a group that she really is outside of threatens her deeply, and threatens her ability to manipulate her sons."

"NBC OUT: I'm always watching Smurf, because being a gay man, I believe mothers always know. Mine did! Does Smurf know?"

"LISCO: All I can say in response to that is we have discussed in the writers' room that she does, and we have discussed that she doesn't, but I think you make a very interesting point. Mothers always know, and if [she] doesn't, why doesn't she? I think that's the question to ask, so if we do go in the direction of her not knowing is it self-denial? Is it suppressing what is right before her? Is there some emotional reason why she's doing that?"

So it's actually not decided yet whether Smurf knows or doesn't. I was almost certain she does know especially with the way she tracks the boys' phones and the way she seems to know everything around her. Remember what she told J? "There are no secrets in this family. Especially not from me".

Well this at least confirms that, either way, Deran being gay is something Smurf would find difficult to deal with. I'd love to see her reaction when/if Deran comes out to her and confesses his love for Adrian. How threatened will she be? How will she try to "fix" it? LOL :D

Thanks for the link. Very interesting interview.
I think that, if smurf knows, she is in deep denial.
I agree with Deran being the brother that wants to escape more( Belice).
I do hope that they develop adrian/ deran's relationship more in the next season.

After all the insanity Adrian put up with and the things Deran did, I would hope ANYBODY would have enough sense to stay away. He isn't even all that good looking.

reply

Well that's a matter of opinion. I think he's very good looking.
I agree he'd be crazy to get back with him while he's still in denial though.

I don't think she does know, yet. She's too much of a narcissist to really see Darin (or any of the boys) for who they are as individuals, rather than how she can use them.

My two cents? Smurf must know, or she's not the total badass the viewers have been led to believe she is. But she can't let on that she knows or she risks losing her power over Deran. His biggest fear is being shut out of her love, right? She did that. So if she now says, "Cool, you're into dudes," then Deran has nothing to fear and thus, could be harder to control. If she says, "Oh my GOD, you're into DUDES?," she risks forcing him into making a choice. And he might not choose her.

All just speculation, though, til next year, right?

"I'm losing my perspicacity!"
"It's always in the last place you look."

She knows but I'm sure she is in deep denial. Like Adrian said Smurf wouldn't know what to do with a son that doesn't want to have sex with her.
