Yea, I didn't say don't watch the TV show. They are both different.
Now that the movie is over I have more insight as well.
In the movie, things are coming to a close for the family and they seem to want to GET out of crime because the heat is on them hard. Not so in the TV show.
They seem like they are not worried about the law YET in the TV show but by the end they are sort of worried but then the young lad pulls a twist compared to what happens in the movie.
A few major differences in the film. The mother who ODed on drugs was killed by "the family" in the movie. In the TV show... it's not like that. She just dies from an overdose.
Pope dies in the movie... at the end quite shockingly as well. The kid really got his revenge and smurf seemed to have nothing to say about it for some reason as if she had no power over the boys like in the TV show. Ellen Barkin is a much more powerful Smurf character.
The one guy who is hinted at being "gay" in the movie is gay for 100% in the TV show. They hint about it in the movie but almost as a passing joke because of the way he dresses.... but it's never confirmed as far as I recall.
So both are worth a watch in my opinion.
The movie had to end... so the show can do much more with the characters.
The movie ended how the show should end though because Pope does do something very bad at one point... kill that dude's GF. And he did it for no reason at all except his own paranoia. The show plays out things a bit smarter because characters do things out of reasoning, not so much paranoia.
