Anyone watch the movie AFTER the TV show? Vague spoilers...

Really interested in what you thought if so.

I saw the movie first, absolutely loved it. One of my favourite Aussie movies, can't recommend it enough. I came to the show with some trepidation, but liked it a lot.

Did any of you lot do the opposite? Gonna go into a couple of points, I'll keep it quite vague, but if you wanna watch the movie, I'd suggest going in cold and click off this thread right now... 😀

So, obviously, the movie makers had to wrap up the story in two hours, so two major characters get killed off in the first half of the movie (and there's more to come before the end).

There's also the moment when (somebody) from the family decides to try and have Jay killed. Did they succeed? Well, see the movie!

How do folks who saw the movie relate it to the TV show? What works better in what format? I'm thinking of the end moments when Jay had the gun in his hand... should this be an extended story or should have been a two-hour thing? VERY interested in what you think...

I'd suggest that this thread becomes a discuss-everything kind of thing, so again, if you haven't seen the film, probably an idea to click away...

NY, I'd forgotten that it was based on a true story, so thanks for that!

It's so nice to see a remake / continuation that lives up to the original...

Haven't seen the tv show yet. Animal Kingdom is a 10/10 movie so have some trepidation about watching the tv show.

The movie is based on the Walsh Street Killings in Melbourne, where two young policemen were executed as payback after Victoria Police started executing violent criminals that they had failed to prosecute in the Courts.

I was a kid living in Melbourne at the time it happened - the events shocked the whole city.

My parents who are in their 60's and I both watch the show. I have the movie on Bluray and we plan on watching it as soon as they are caught up. It's fun comparing and contrasting sometimes.

This is a good thread; I will revisit often.

I just completed the first epi of the US show and I really like it.
I wanted to learn more about the production of the show and that's when I discovered it was proceeded by the Aussie movie.

I decided that I will finish up the US tv version first, and then I will check out the movie.

After watching the movie, I'll watch S2 of Bloodlines on Netflix, which also stars Ben Mendelsohn, who kills this role. He does some of the best acting I've ever seen on tv.

Mendelsohn is one of the best actors around, so I can't wait to watch the Aussie version.

I watched the movie after finishing the tv series. It was funny how some of the scenes were spot on from the movie. Movie Smurf was much more disarming. I was almost convinced that she wasn't so bad until the end with the thing with J. Pope in the movie and the series are the highlights for me. Ben Mendelsohn is amazing but TV Pope is easier to sympathize with although I will say the kid could have at least let him finish his speech. TV J seems a little more savvy than movie J. At this point I wouldn't mind seeing what happened to movie Baz happen to TV Baz 'cause TV Baz deserves it more, same with TV Nicki but done by someone other than Pope.

I watched the movie after finishing the tv season. They both have their good points. You can't get to know the characters in depth in a 2 hour movie, especially Baz. I think I was spot on about J becoming the darkest of them all after watching the movie. Jackie Weaver is fantastic, but I really like Ellen Barkin in the Smurf role too. Ben Mendelsohn is mesmerizing as Pope! When the US remakes something from the Aussies, they always seem to pretty up the characters. They did it here, in The Slap and Secrets and Lies.
