Women castrating bullies, men are incompetent. That sums it up.

I'm a woman, and a pretty empowered one, and I like strong female characters.

But the women in this show demonstrate the very worst stereotypes from sitcoms from decades ago. They use sex and affection as bargaining tools or rewards to be doled out when husbands have been super thoughtul, or remembered infinitesimal details from the past. The female teacher is a manipulative bully who regularly insults and chastises the parents of her students, and decides which students deserve the privilege of her teaching based on how well the parents please her (so, she'd be fired if this was real life). The one man who has been a stay-at-home parent for several years is effeminate, nervous, and weak and the main character is apparently useless at parenting except when he defers to the ladies. His relentlessly offputting wife -- who becomes tough and overbearing at the drop of a hat, even telling him when and if he can be in charge of his own children -- is equally critical of his every move, even when he makes mistakes because he simply has no idea what she has done in the parent role before him.

I like Matt LeBlanc and I like strong women, but strong doesn't mean being petty, inconsiderate, or emasculating, even if the woman in the role is physically bigger than her male counterpart and really tough looking. To compare another new series -- Speechless -- the Minnie Driver character is tough as nails and pretty much crazy, but at least she feels genuine in her more loving moments and doesn't seem to dole out affection as a reward, and the writing is fresh.

The men, overall, are written as deceitful and scared of their wives (especially the brother character), less competent than the women, and generally fallible. And of course when the two brothers get together, they talk about how scared they are of their wives. The brother is just a total jerk. Nothing redeeming about him at all so far.

In the last episode they even took a swipe at menopausal women, using the tired of trope of casting them as scary. Wow. Just wow.

And as an aside, who would have so little pride in their home to stick that horrible kids backpack cubby as a focal point in the front of their living room. Yech.

Aside from the stereotypes and male/female power jockying, the characters have nothing interesting at all about them. They are bascially nondescript, living in a nondescript house with no apparent quirks or personal interests. The three kids have no character developoment at all, other than one likes to fondle himself. Uh, ok. The writers have done nothing to create personality with these people. The writing staff is dialling it in, and just three episodes in, are already just rehashing plots we've seen a dozen times over. Sorry Matt. Better luck with your next show. I'm stunned at how weak this one is. This needs a serious change in writing, and a recast on the wife, pronto.

I can agree. I haven't seen this show. But with everything now days ajd for a while now they are trying to flip roles and blur lines. Men are no longer men and the same with women. And they push this hard. Not only that but in sitcoms anymore the parents are usually idiots.
And I have no problem with women but generally speaking men of the families are suppose to be the leaders and should do everything they can to support their families. Unless there are circumstances like the man is disabled or something not man should be comfo

I'm seriously curious why, if you've never seen the show, you are reading the message board...no disrespect, just insanely curious.

Trying to make up their mind whether to watch it or not, whether it's worth the time investment. Isn't that reasonable?

I accidentally posted. I was saying no man should be ok with being a stay at home Dad. We weren't made fore it.

I switched it off, when LeBlanc's character tells his brother, that he pulled the little girl out of class and into another one, and the brother says, "You didn't discuss this with your wife?" I knew where this was going, it has been done over and over, on other shows.

I'm okay with the mom and I'm okay with the sister-in-law, but the teacher is one of the most poorly written characters I've ever encountered. The puppet episode appears to have had a bunch of male writers, who clearly have issues. Maybe there'll be some denouement to explain why the teacher is such an irrational, petty, bully. Haha, as if...

Every episode has a couple of laughs but it's like something written in the 90s.

Oh, Speechless is the best mainstream sitcom since Modern Family, IMO.

You're the perfect example of the wussificaiton of society. Quit whining about EVERYTHING.

I'm a woman (means squat) and a pretty empowered one (means squat)

Other than that, it's a TV show (marketing tool), nothing more. It's not made to entertain, but to sell agenda, products, etc.

This is what happens when you let females out of the kitchen.

It's always super helpful when someone takes the time to write a post letting everyone know that something is not of importance or relevance, to the extent that it's vital to point it out.

I don't actually disagree, but really? Glad you got that off your chest.

totally agree.. I started watching it because of Matt... but couldn't watch more than 2 episode..

we all have been watching 'MAN ARE LOSER concept' that Hollywood uses in almost every sitcom but this wasn't even a Funny one..!

The latest episode where the kids conspire against the parents, and the parents are trying to get a confession out of the kids to find out which put the hole in the wall, without success. After they leave the oldest girl's room, Dad, says let's see if we can get through to the dumb kid, and without them saying who, I knew they meant the boy; then the Mom, after telling her husband, she has no dumb kids, she then agrees he was talking about Teddy, the boy. Even the male child is made out to be the loser.

I like the show. Hopefully you'll give it a chance to get better. I don't disagree with the things you say, but that also gives them comedic material.
