What this show is lacking...
So I've been watching this show and I think it's funny, but it feels like something is lacking...and that is the father's interaction with his children. What worked in the pilot was his attempts to discipline his children. When he said, "I can't believe I have to explain a line to you," it's funny! After the pilot though, the children are barely involved in the plot and all of his interactions with them are dismissive and he just looks annoyed. The show as a whole feels more like "Mike and Molly" plus 3 meat bags...with emphasis on the couple. I get that this show is not the same as other family shows out there but when they have 3 kids as flat characters that hop in and out of the background, their only purpose is to show that this couple has kids, the show hasn't reached its fullest potential.
For example, let's look at the next episode, "Thanksgiving," it looks like it's more about the dad helping the school with their crap, and have tons of interactions with the bitchy teacher and the other idiotic parent, instead of trying to deal with the kids and trying to celebrate thanksgiving with the family. maybe even deal with the other family members coming to visit, expecting a thanksgiving meal prepared like they always do before Andi started working again, and Matt has to try to cook while dealing with his son causing troubles at school or something.
