I wanted to like it... but I hate every character so far.

I mean, some TV shows have dumb over-the-top characters that you're not necessarily supposed to like as a person, but you might still like them as the characters they are - for instance, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Now, I saw all of the commercials for this show for weeks and didn't really care to watch it.

But I randomly caught the 5th episode on last night and learned that Ron Livingston was also in it, and I tend to like him. Overall, the 5th episode was still pretty silly for the heck of it, like Chantal's ex-roommate, but it caught my interest more.

I just decided to try it out and so I watched the pilot. That completely reversed my interest and I absolutely hate every single one of the 4 main characters. They're modern day archetypal characters with this beginning.

Should I even bother further? Does the show get any less stupid with them (e.g., Drew stops simultaneously being a baby and a freak, or Dory or Portia stop being idiots for different reasons)?

EDIT:
Nevermind, I answered the question for myself. I was going to watch 1 more episode and then give it a break and see if anyone said anything.

But I couldn't even finish the 2nd episode! The interaction between Dory and the cop (and her killing black teens comment), Elliott and that other guy, etc. Just horrible.

Even being a dark comedy or trying to be satirical, I can't actually stand it apparently.

You shall be missed. Soldier on sweet angel.

It's not common for TV characters to be so bad that I can't stand them!

reply

I thought it was an enjoyable show overall.

The show gets better with each episode. It doesn't support their milleniall narcissism at all. It all comes back to haunt them in their own way.

reply

Hmm... That's why I was asking.

I didn't know if they just stay the same and have stupid things happen, or if the show actually goes somewhere with it.

I just couldn't even make it through the first couple of episodes without despising them.

reply

Oh yeah, there is certainly commentary about the post-grad leisure class, that maybe having too much time on one's hands and an over-active imagination could lead to some real world trouble.

reply

Meh it was a decent show, not very memorable overall and a disappointing ending.

To me Dory is the only one who isn't completely unlikable. Cannot stand her "friends" or boyfriend. Also, the one friend looks like Dave Coulier from Full House and I cannot unsee it.

reply

Why? Her boyfriend did not cheat on her when he had a chance. Dory cheated on him without hesitating a moment. She could not wait to jump the PI's bones. She is a horrible, horrible person.

reply

the only character that was reasonably likable was Dory's friend Portia. she started off kind of vapid/meh...but by the middle of the season (and most definitely by the end of it) she was overtly likable and dare i say even sympathetic.
