Much like Alien Covenant - If the characters are stupid, then I don't care if they die. If I don't care if they die, there is no suspense or investment from the me/audience. It also makes the gotcha ending unimpressive to say the least. Hollywood writers - stop making your characters dumb

We're talking about a movie, not real life people. When someone runs a red light in real life and gets taken out by a semi, that's just horrible, regardless of it being their mistake. When a movie character does something they absolutely should have known not to do based on who their character is, a lot of people may just think 'OMG you deserved it dumbass!' It can depend on the quality of the story and the acting how much empathy is inspired in such a case.
