I think everybody forgot that the first movie was terrible.

I remember seeing the trailers for the fast and the furious back in 2001 and thinking it looked like a pretty fun entertaining movie. Then when I went to theaters to see it I was extremely disappointed and I still think the movie is pretty terrible. I also remember many people trashing the movie when it first came out. Gone in 60 seconds was way more praised at the time. I remember when 2 fast 2 furious came out and people said it had a little bit more of a plot then the first one lol. Then when Tokyo drift came out it looked like it was pretty much done. Fast and furious is still also a pretty terrible movie but then when fast five came out they became fun action movies and not so serious car racing movies. That’s when they actually became fun movies. The first one didn’t really deserve a sequel.

The first one was legendary not because it was a good movie. It was a pioneer. A breakthrough. It set the tone to street racing madness, from movies to video games and everything in between. It was a cultural milestone. It's comparable to X-Men (2000) in the superhero genre.

I disagree. It was a clear rip off of point break and poorly executed at that. Vin Diesel‘s character tries so hard to be cool but just comes off as A douche bag. He’s not deep or complicated. Paul Walker falls flat as well. The overall story is pretty weak.

Being a clear rip off of point break doesn't mean that it wasn't a pioneer as the poster explained. Should we provide a list of movies, video games, and all other media (social, news, cultural, etc.) from the era that followed to show influential the first film was, or would you disagree too? Would you claim that entire explosion of street racing that heightened after the first film dropped was just coincidence all because you don't like the movie?

Also, The Fast and the Furious IS a ripoff. But it rips off No Man's Land, not Point Break. So it's "clear". It just sounds like you really dislike the first film, and you're now just stacking on reasons to hate on it without thinking any of it through.
