Oliver is..

the 2016 version of an "Alex P. Keaton," lol. He's cute - and a good actor!. Actually, all 3 kids are great, IMO

reply

That's what the writers have said. They are not doing a very good job with that. First of all Keaton was not as cold as this kid. Alex would have never ever done the cat food thing. Second of all this actor does not have the charm of Michael J. Fox. He delivers his lines robotically and with no feeling. I am glad they have made him more like a kid the last couple of eps. Because Keaton wasn't always about making money. He did have a somewhat active social life. So some tweaks are still needed for Oliver. I don't think the writers really like his character all that much, but that ain't surprising.

reply

I originally was going to pass on this show outright but I read right before the premiere that his character was a modern take on Alex P. Keaton and I was sold. Show's gotten better since the pilot.

Sitcoms always take time to hammer things out. The show is likely written by liberals so writing a conservative will take time to get right. But I've never seen a sitcom come out fully baked. Takes time.

reply

I agree! And I think that they're off to a great start...(come on, getting kicked out of his stock market club for 'insider trading?" That's hilarious!! And to those who think Alex P Keaton was less cold/more social - give the writers a chance! It's only been 3 episodes - I don't even think that we've seen Oliver with kids his own age yet. He's a cutie - I'm sure there will be girls going after him and all of that good stuff :)

reply

Like I said. They have not written him all that well. As another poster said, the writers are no doubt liberals. They have no clue how to write him. In many of the eps so far I don't even get that the mother likes this kid. She practically loathes him. Very unlike Elise and Stephen. I don't think he's like Keaton at all. Ok. I will tell you who he's like. He's like a younger version of Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life. There you go. That's the template these idiot writers are going off of.

And you think the writers of Family Ties were all Republicans?!? No offense, but that's kind of funny. Why would the writers have to be conservsative to write a 12 yr old boy's (who's obsessed with the mighty green). I mean, men write women's characters and vice versa - and that's only one example.

reply

No. The Family Ties writers were definitely liberals. They clearly did not intend to make Alex the star of the show. The stars of the show were supposed to be the parents. Ooops.

But no these writers do not know how to write him for some reason. My guess is that this how they see conservatives. There's still some hope for this show. But the writing for this character has to get a whole lot better.

speedy:
Why would anybody care whether a 12-year old boy is conservative or not? Kids that age wouldn't even understand or care what the hell being conservative or liberal is. Quit projecting your political BS onto a child, who could care less about any of that.

reply

I don't like the way he's written either. I think he's too over the top for a 12 yo. Too snarky.

straw hat boy luffy:

"The show is likely written by liberals so writing a conservative will take time to get right."

What kind of dumb-a** stupid statement is that? Liberals and conservatives are just people----stop acting like conservatives are so much better and more special than everybody, because you're not. Y'all fck up just like anybody else on earth---ain't nobody perfect, not even you. Give me a break from this political bull****. Conservatives are easy to make fun of because y'all are so damn upright and narrow-minded,elitist, and stuck-up as hell. And y'all backed that fcking idiot trumpf into office. The repubs have little to no credibility right now because of that. So spare me "oh,conservatives are so put upon by these mere liberals" bull****. This liberal says, fck all that, and any conservatives who don't like what I said can kiss my fun, lively liberal a**,lol. Plus liberals are a hell of lot more fun to write in movies and TV shows, lol.

reply

Alex is definitely more likeable.

reply

Well now they can liven up and modernize the character by having him speak glowingly about President Trump.

reply

It's not just the writing. The actor's delivery is so one-dimensional. Needs a strong director/acting coach to make the character sympathetic and likable.

reply

I agree. The delivery is odd.

reply

Yes! Perfect comparison. I get a kick out of him.
