The wrong parent is stressed out.
Father works all day, but, it's the mother who stresses out.

shareHe is stressed. They just don't show it. Anna Kat picks up her weird habits from him, they mention it in an episode.
shareAnybody mom who is stuck home with three kids all day would be more stressed than the father.
shareThe kids are in school the whole day. She gets seven hours of "me" time, the dad doesn't.
shareYou've got a point - the kids are all school aged.

Me time? Spoken like a true non-parent. Do you think there are magic elves who do the grocery shopping and the laundry for FIVE people, clean the entire house, change sheets, make beds, mop, sweep, do dishes, run errands to make sure everyone has everything they need, meal planning AND cooking, making appointments and important phone calls, etc etc etc...?
Yes because all of that is just wayyyyy more stressful than working 8 hours a day not including commute to and from work. First of all she doesn't need to grocery shop everyday. And laundry? You throw it in the washer, you wait an hour, you throw it in the dryer, you wait an hour, you take it out and fold it. Oh that's so stressful. Mopping and sweeping floors? Congrats you've just found a way to take up 30 mins of time. Meal planning? Give me a break. Important phone calls? I can't even handle it. Sorry but she's her own boss and gets to divvy up her chores throughout the day however she pleases. If one day she doesn't feel like doing it, she doesn't have to. The kids are old enough to take care of themselves after school and can even be given chores to help out. I was off work for two weeks once and I was amazed how less stressful my day was just taking care of things around the house and yard and believe me, I did A LOT, rather than going to work. It was less stressful, mentally, physically and emotionally. So while I'm not gonna say the mothers life is stress-free because it isn't, the idea that her day is more stressful than her husbands is hilarious.

It takes more time than 30 minutes to clean a whole house especially one where there is stuff all over like in this tv series. I'd imagine doing laundry for five people takes long time. Some meals don't take long time but others meals can take a while.
shareI can imagine being a "housewife" with three kids can be a pretty busy/stressful job, depending on one's diligence and attention to detail.
The stress of having a job outside the home depends on the job and the person holding the job. Having a job that you love would be the opposite of stressful, and the husband strikes me as being the type of person who doesn't let too much bother him.
In conclusion, I think the characterizations here are pretty valid.

He's stressed, that's why he's so weird. He has some OCD when he's writing. They showed that in one episode, where he had to do certain things before he could write, kept getting interupted, and had to start all over. I think the series is still finding it's groove, I'll keep watching, it's better than all the police and doctor dramas.
shareI am sure the dad is stressed too, but I tell you what I've done both. I've had a full time job and I've been a stay at home mom. Being a stay at home mom is by far more stressful, but my kids are still young so it's a little different. However, even if her kids are older and not at home as much doesn't mean all that time is me time. That is spoken like someone who has no idea what goes into running a house. I spend hours cleaning almost every day, and that is not including such thing as laundry, cooking, or grocery shopping, or all the other countless errands that have to be done.
