Head turning

Love this show, just my genre.

Though one thing bothers me: as a show supposed to be a sequel and within the same universe as the old 1973 Exorcist, why does it yield death to the possesed victim if the head is turned/spinned, when it clearly does nothing to Regan in the old movie?

It's too obvious to be ignored.

I have only seen season 1, so maybe it will be elaborated later?

Even though the story picked up from the famous original movie, it wasn't exactly the same. I read that William Peter Blatty who wrote the book acknowledged that he was told by the producers they would be changing some elements for the series.

As things progress in season 2, it seems the priests are working to fight different demons who may have different properties and plans.
