Didn't the filmmakers ever go to Sunday school?

People in that culture at that time were unfortunately racist, and would have made a big stink if Shimon (later given the street name Petros) were a Nubian.

Well....the movie has a WHITE JESUS so I guess we are close to even.

Joaquin Phoenix is jewish. His mother is jewish.

As far as casting, that's irrelevant. He is a fine actor.

People in this culture at this time are also racist which is possibly what led to the casting of white actors as Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
