Trevor Noah’s Daily Show is irrelevant, says Kristin Hunt, and Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, while great, is more like 60 Minutes or Frontline compared to Stewart's Daily Show. As Hunt notes, “what Stewart was aiming to do...was help you process and get over that dumb, viral soundbite some senator dropped on CNN the other day. Samantha Bee knows how to do that, too—better than anyone else on TV right now.”
Because while his Daily Show wanted to make you laugh, it also wanted a cathartic reaction. Stewart railed against petty politicians to remind viewers they weren't alone in their anger at what was happening in the world that day, and that they should be mad as hell, like a Howard Beale with a sense of humor.
The exact same thing could be said about the Colbert Report, imo, except, rather than retiring like Jon, Steven completely lost his cojones . "I'm as happy as hell, and I'm not going to play an angry character anymore!"

But it's not the Colbert Report anymore, it's the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Two different parties with just the host in common. This is not to say I'm loving the new Late Show as much as I loved the Colbert Report or David Letterman's original. It has a lot more ups and downs and Stephen is not the interviewer I hoped he would be. But I am loving Sam Bee's program. Wish is was longer, or on more often than once a week.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
Agreed. I like Stephen's show a lot, but it is uneven. Both Samantha and John Oliver are doing great. I too wish it (both shows actually) were longer and/ or on more often, but I'm willing to sacrifice quantity for quality, which both shows have definitely delivered.
