It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. Minor spoiler

Am I the only one who thinks this film was just OK? The majority seem to be gushing over how wonderful it is, but I just thought it was average.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad at all, and I absolutely loved the artwork and stunningly beautiful sceneries throughout the film, but I found the plot too childish, idyllic and naive. Sure, it's anime so that's to be expected, but I was hoping for something a bit more thought-provoking and "raw".

It's a nice idea that there's someone for everyone and somehow we're connected, blah blah blah and I totally get the feeling of always searching for something/someone too, but I guess I'm not a teenager anymore and my life has made me far too cynical for my own good!!! LOL The director seems to like being in a perpetual melancholy state too as if his or anyone else's life is out of their control (yes, I have seen his other films and they all seem to have this element of pensiveness/loneliness/wistfulness to them), so it's just not my cup of tea.

Anyway, it's still an enjoyable film to get lost in for a couple of hours as a form of escapism but that's about it.

I thought it was a lot better than just OK and really enjoyed it. It may not be in the same league as a Studio Ghibli classic but I'll be watching it again (and again).

I hear ya, OP. This was recommended to me as "anime for people who don't like anime" and I just didn't get it. A lot of anime is very nice to look at. Especially the Ghilbi stuff. But the stories never stick with me. It almost feels like reading the sports page in the newspaper.

Yes, and much of this has been seen before. I don't quite understand the 8.4 rating it's getting; gave it a 7 instead.
