No love from the academy awards...

It deserved a nomination... Oh well, it's their loss.

maybe this is the real reason why Your Name got snubbed at the Oscars this year:

Well, I know that Hayao Miyazaki have a lot of talents & experiences on making anime films for the past 20 years (notably on Princess Mononoke) & even got many awards both in Japan & parts of the world, and congrats that his latest film The Red Turtle got another Oscars nod & we thought that The Wind Rises will be his last one. But anyway, its sad that another anime film that is now becoming a huge hit at the box office for 2016 & I'm talking about Your Name (or also known as Kimi no na wa in Japanese) and that anime film have many positive reviews & even a success box office earnings as what I'd mentioned above & rumor had it it'll be an Oscar contender for this year... and then this. The Red Turtle got a nod for Animated Featured Film & Kimi No Na Wa didn't make the cut. I know that the US theatrical release for Your Name will be on April 7 while The Red Turtle is now shown in US theater but under a limited release, but what's the reason why this anime file made it to this year's Oscars for Best Animated Film and not Your Name? Was it because those the Academys are not too fond on the hype but they're really looking on great storyline or Your Name is too commercialized than The Red Turtle? So what's the reason of this issue?

Hm? Hayao Miyazaki wasn't even involved in the Red Turtle let alone direct it. Only Studio Ghibli was involved by working on the animation with a french company leading the production. It was a french-Japan co-production so I don't know if that even qualifies as an anime.
Anyway, the reason Kimi no na wa wasn't nominated was because there was too much competition as well as not enough hype behind the film in America (in the Asian countries yes, but not in America). I personally think the film was better than all the animated films nominated, but that's just how the Oscars work; they ignore the best ones and nominate something they know.

And of course they had to nominate 2 Disney films.

Maybe the Academy should finally get rid of Best Animated Feature film since most of the Disney films are always winning the most on that category for the past 10 years. Looks bias to me, don't you think? 😔

I don't think they should or would get rid of it, but it would be wonderful if they would just reach out some more. At this point it just seems like the voters/academy people simply don't care.

Maybe you should stop whining about this. If you are going to take down an entire category because of a perceived bias, you should take down the entire ceremony. Awards are arbitrary, especially the Oscars, so there is no need to get your panties in a twist over this.

It's a real shame.
Seriously deserved a nomination over Moana.
Oh well, at least Kubo is there and Dory isn't.

I totally agree, I finally watched it today and I was mesmerized by the animation, the music, the settings, everything. I'm bummed it didn't get an Oscar nomination.

I don't think the Oscars are aware that non-Ghibli anime exists.

Shinkai-san isn't as well known as Miyazaki. That may be a good thing.

There IS still hope yet. Remember that Spirited Away didn't get a nomination for Best Animated Feature when it initially came out (internationally), but it DID get a nomination and eventually winning Best Animated Feature at the 2003 (75th) Academy Awards Ceremony.

Your Name, on the other hand, won't be coming out in the states until April of this year. Anyway, let's hope that it gets the love it deserved this year, NEXT year. Anything's possible at this point.

Well could be, so we'll wait & see if Your Name could make an Oscar nod next year & if the US opening on April 7 will become a huge success at the box office [as it'll open on the top 5 spot] which is now this film had already crossed to $300+ million box office earnings worldwide & beaten Spirited Away as of now. This is also been the case to an Academy Award winning film, The Hurt Locker when that one was released in 2008 & it premiered on Venice Film Festival on that year but it made through the Oscar nods in 2010 instead of 2009 due to the official theatrical release in the US was on June 26, 2009... and as we all know it, the rest is history (sorry for Avatar). 😝

So maybe Your Name is following the examples of The Hurt Locker & Spirited Away & maybe, just maybe... they'll get an Oscar nod for Best Animated Featured Film by next year instead of this year & win it! Hopefully the US distributor of this film, Funimation made a right decision & strategy for (partly) delaying its release in the US & Canada moving from this month to April 7 but better watch out for other competitors that might face it for an Oscar race like it's fellow anime film In This Corner of The World, a sequel to Minions and again, another 3D Disney movies and they're like hungry wolves waiting for an Oscars nods & dream to get the trophy.

But if there's a worst case scenario that might not get an Oscar nod next year, well the director of Your Name, Makoto Shinkai will have his next film project to work in it as his promise. And I do believe this will be his next project, a spin-off to Your Name: Another Side: Earthbound! which is a novel made by himself and this novel will be release in May through Yen Press just a month after the theatrical US release of Your Name:

So there might be a hope for Your Name fans out there. 😘

Do people not realize that a film can only be considered for Oscars only once? Your Name was under consideration this year and wasn't nominated, get over it. This April 4th date you all are talking about is the second release date after the one in December last year. I love Kimi no na wa as much as the next guy, but stop coming up with these ridiculous hopes that the film will somehow be nominated next year.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that won't happen. Spirited Away was nominated in 2003 because the US release was in fall of 2002. While some may think that Your Name's US release date is in 2017, the Oscar qualifying release date was in December of 2016 when it ran for a week in LA for Oscar consideration. It was under consideration this year and didn't get it, so that's the end of that.
