shareI dunno. I really think her swim was a rather vain act. I'm sure it was an important accomplishment to her for personal reasons. But I'm more interested in people who do great acts to change the world. I'm just not impressed by athletes who win world records.
shareBut people like her do change the world, they inspire others.
shareHow many people have done the same thing?
Swimming 110 miles doesn't solve climate change.
You can change the world in smaller ways like inspire others to do good things.
shareEven if "climate change" was a real problem to be "solved", instead of just a hoax, there are many other interesting, worthwhile things going on.
shareOkay, good point. Macro versus micro.
shareWhat an asshole take.
shareWhy? If she was my buddy I'd give her a high five. She did great. But hers is a personal victory. I'm impressed by those who do something to help others, really change the world. Her story means nothing to me.
shareIt's not either/or. Athletes inspire other people when they achieve something.
shareExactly. I watched "Nyad" - thought it was pretty good. The big thing is how inspiring it is. It turns out her swim from Cuba to Florida was never properly ratified. Some doubt if she did it fair and square. Well, she may have, she may not have - I certainly don't know, I wasn't there. But even if she did cheat a little bit - its still an incredible accomplishment.
It certainly has inspired me to keep pushing and trying hard with the physical fitness.
