I have zero sympathy for cult victims
Not excusing cult leaders but I have zero sympathy for someone so stupid they would fall into a cult.
shareNot excusing cult leaders but I have zero sympathy for someone so stupid they would fall into a cult.
share1.) Being "stupid" isn't a crime, or something people asked for.
2.) From what I've seen, people who are drawn to participate in cults are quite altruistic and well-meaning people, initially. Often they've studied philosophy and/or religion. They're (lost) people looking for "answers".
3.) Cults don't invite you to enter with a big sign that reads, "Hi! We're a Cult!" These groups either hide behind a fake front (like $cientology being a church) or, perhaps more interestingly, begin as something else, more benign, only gradually growing over years into something more rigid, controlling and sicker. For instance, this particular group started out merely as a meditation group exploring spirituality. It was the members' bad luck to fall in with someone who was knowingly deceptive, manipulative, and narcissistic.
.
I thought many cults learned from the Hare Krishnas that many people are turned off by an outward appearance that is foreign/alien threatening.
Thus many cult leaders use self-help and personal power/actualization to lure unsuspecting potential members in the group.
Thus it may start out with yoga, meditation and stress relief classes seminars and then group spiritual meetings and then retreats, etc...
A gradual process of indoctrination, manipulation and brainwashing.
For me, the linchpin and the turning point for an individual in this particular group to cross from an individual seeking spirituality and enlightenment to a cult member was the leader's introduction of "service" to that member.
While at the beginning, "serivce" appears to be benign and altruistic, the cult members were coerced into non consensual work by manipulation and "service"-- as the service morphed from a member's goal a spiritual enlightenment thru serving the community and others-- to serving the "master."
I get where you're coming from but I would use "weak" rather than "stupid." They seemed like intelligent people who wanted to connect with others in service (and perhaps in art for many of them). Outside of religious groups, our society rarely allows for that kind of relationship. It's not my thing but they seemed to like holding one another, laughing and crying together. As adults, we don?t get to dance around in the waves with large groups....umm...unless one is in a performance group, but even then they might frown on the extended hugs.
I felt sorry for them in that their need to find meaning in service and simple joys bound them to a narcissist.
Yes...it was sad to see the members tearing up as they remembered the good times. It seems like they really did all consider each other to be family, and to mutually support each other.
.
Just say no sympathy... this 'zero' *beep* is getting lame...
shareI wouldn't say "zero sympathy" but I'm sure as hell laughing my ass off!
shareMaybe if you studied human psychology you would have a little more sympathy.
Batman v Superman was terrible
Civil War was underwhelming
X-Men Apocalypse was underwhelming
I'm pretty certain that the types of people who have zero sympathy for cult victims are the exact type of people who would fall into one. If you don't have enough education or empathy to understand how this could happen to any person that feels lonely or lost then you probably don't have the mental capacity to withstand brainwashing.
shareA bit harsh and judgmental, don't you think? Some truth in the idea that a somewhat pathological predisposition was a necessary condition, for sure, but 'pathetic lost souls who can't cut it in the real world' strikes me as a cynical and facile dismissal.
Yeah your right, was way too cynical. My Father always said walk a mile in somebody's shoes before you judge them.
I think these people were just kind of pathetic, lost souls if you will. When Michael came along they happily joined a cult, they worshipped him like a God. Yes Michael is a complete scumbag rapist but they kept feeing his narcissistic ego! I do have sympathy for the victims, they were almost childlike in their behaviour. They choose to stay so I can understand why the victims get little sympathy on these boards. I suppose his disciples just couldn't cut it in the real world :-(

Exactly. They're just as much apart of the real world as we are, they were just brainwashed by one manipulative individual. And unfortunately, this man would have not had any real following without them.
shareThey didn't happily join though, like another user pointed out. Many of these people, including the filmmaker, were people who were displaced or had no where else to turn to. If your family told you tomorrow that they were throwing you out and you had no where else to go, you could easily fall into a group like this. It gradually became abusive over time. For Michal it was an act, but in the beginning, he made it more about them and their spiritual journey, and less about him. After the first accusations of it being a cult, it just seems like he began to lose it little by little. And then over time, it became ALL about him because that's how narcissists are. Cristala hit the nail over the head when she said this was the role of a lifetime for him.
shareThat's a bit strong IMO. You get young people following a narcissist that makes you feel wanted and loved. Constant love bombing from beautiful looking people can suck you in. I don't see any difference between the Buddha Field and any other religious group. I do feel sympathy for some of them especially the sexually abused men in the group...
shareI just read the last 20 Imdb reviews and there are several with similar sentiments.
Most of these west-coast cults are led by people with bipolar/schizophrenia. The ideas are New Age, which is almost 100 years old. Gullible people are attracted to it. Even the non-cults charge big bucks for enlightenment.
